Objetivo
This project has several objectives:
- to demonstrate improvement in product quality
- to prove claimed manpower and cost reductions for cleaning of the
melting vessel are attainable
- to demonstrate the potential of alternative fuels
- to develop a melting system which will find widespread use
in the food industry (breweries, dairies, butter melting factories etc.).
Only part of the initial programme concerned with the actual preparation of raw butter (crushing and melting) was carried out. This involves a new, patented process to facilitate water evaporation.
The installation of a boiler, fired by waste paper in respect of anti-pollution regulations, proved uneconomical and was abandoned.
Although a small steam turbine supply was tested successfully, a 50% decrease in treated butter tonnage, led to the abandonment of the plan to purchase a full size turbine.
The following features show how the new plant concept differs from the existing one:
- the heating oil-based steam generation system is to be replaced by an alternative one fuelled from the butter packing process
- butter melting systems are designed to prevent 'butter burning' by the use of low temperature, condensating pressure steam at below atmospheric pressure leading to reduced cleaning time
- a steam turbine will produce electricity for the plant.
- new condensing and optimisation techniques will reduce overall heat loss.
