Objective
An existing office building in Frankfurt, which is equipped with a dual-duct air-conditioning system, is planned to be converted to the energy-saving Capillary Tube Matting System (CTM) by HERBST
.
1. Problem
Many office buildings constructed during the 1950's to the 1970's are equipped with uneconomical heating and air-conditioning systems.
The Frankfurt office building "Am Palmengarten" is a typical example. Its dual-duct air-conditioning system circulates approximately 100,000 m3 of air per hour for heating and air conditioning. Sixty percent of the energy costs required for heating and air conditioning are consumed by the electric power for the blowers.
2. Solution
Such buildings can be modernized by installing CTM ceilings and CTM -floors for heating and cooling of the rooms.
The minimal quantity of air required from the hygienic standpoint can be supplied directly into the rooms by a newly developed laminar air grid located just above the floor ducting.
There are two main innovations in the CTM-system :
1) Capillary tube matting : The CTM is a plaited network consisting of plastic tubing approx. 2 mm in diameter through which water is caused to flow. It can be embeddedclose to the surface under ceilings and floors and convert building components into heating and cooling surfaces.
2) Laminar airgrid : New linear-shaped opening integrated into the wall skirting ensure a laminar non draft supply of air with less energy for ventilation.
3. Advantages
Energy costs for office buildings can be drastically reduced by the CTM Capillary Tube Matting System. Calculations for the demonstration project show that the following cost savings can be expected for energy
Share of blowers : decrease from 60 to 6 %
Share for heating : decrease from 35 to 31 %
Share for cooling : decrease from 15 to 5 %
TOTAL : decrease from 100 to 42 %.
4. Testing
For two years, the system will be scientifically observed and supported, in order to document the energy-saving effects and to optimize the operational characteristics of the system.
