Objective
The production of synthetic resin leads to generation of noxious vapours that require incineration. These vapours are mixed with inertgas ans require the use of fuel gas in order to reach incinerator temperature. In synthese this project liquid organic wastes will be used to adjust for the extreme fluctuations in gas volume flow and composition. A waste heat boiler will also be used to recover waste heat for process and space heating uses. Innovatory aspects include the complex control system and use of the waste heat boiler.
Immediately after the installation was put into use the first results became visible. Waste that in the past was destroyed externally could be burned in the installation. In this way - despite start-up problem with the installation - already 756 ton waste was burned in the installation up to and including march, giving Synthese savings of NLG 100.000,-. Also the advance note 1989 from "Hoogheemraadschap" for pollution tax was NLG 300.000 lower than in 1988, which for the greatest part falls back on the incinerator. As to energy-saving we can't give figures yet, because the meter of the organic waste doesn't function yet. We hope to solve this problem in June. But the expected energy saving of 753 TOE per year seems certainly feasible.
The demonstration project comprises the replacement of an energy consuming vent gas flare by a combined incineration/waste heat boiler system producing useful energy from waste.
The most important aspects of the installation are as follows :
- use of the acqueous waste stream for combustion control in order to maintain stable furnace conditions under strongly fluctuating vent gas loads.
- The foregoing made possible by means of an advanced automatic self checking Programmable Logic Controller with analog functions.
- The incinerator is used for the combined combustion of :
* noxious waste gases from resin production reactors
* liquid organic wastes from resin production
* acqueous reaction condensates contamined with non-biodegradable phenolic compounds
- Saturated steam is produced and used for heating of process vessels and buildings.
