Objective
To demonstrate the effectiveness of an electronic system optimizing the operation of boat propulsion systems. This optimization is aimed at reducing the fuel-oil consumption taking into account, at the same time the operation constraints.
It is expected that an energy saving of 268 TOE/year will be achieved for a ship type "CAR FERRY" (2% of the conventional energy consumption). Payback time is estimated at 16 months when commercialized.
The electronic system consists in meters, one central unit and one control unit. After treatment of informations delivered by the meters, the central unit acts on the propeller pitch and/or the rotation speed in order to :
- either maintain the speed of the ship constant while minimizing the energy consumption
- or maintain constant the hourly consumption or the consumption for nautical mile.
Accurary and reliability of the consumption measurement is of vital interest in this servo-control system. Two measurement methods are proposed for the demonstration ships (CAR FERRY) : * direct measurement with ultrasonic meters.
* indirect measurement from the position of the fuel pump rack and the engine rotation speed onwards.
The servo-control system will be fitted on 2 similar car ferries of the maritime company SNMCM (Marseille - France).
The trials will check the effectiveness of the system for the 2 modes of ship's operation (fixed ship speed during the busy season; fixed consumptionduring off season).
For car ferries, the payback time is estimated at 16 months assuming an investement of 280 000 FF when commercialized and an energy saving of 268 TOE/year (2% of the conventional consumption). It is expected to adapt the innovative control to smaller ships such as tugs. In this case, the investment would amount to 160 000 FF and the payback to 24 months assuming an energy of 63 TOE/year/ship (5% of the conventional consumption).
The potential market in Europe is of the order of 400 units for large ships and 4000 units for smaller ships.
