Objectif
To demonstrate, by the use of Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR), a reduction in the energy consumption of a continuous steam heated contact dryer used for the processing of animal by-products. Estimated energy reduction is 70%, equivalent to 1,930 TOE/y. Project payback is estimated at 3 years.
The innovative aspect of the project is in the steam compression factor: this is achieved at a ratio of over 8:1.
The dryer is designed to operate at 5,4 T. steam/h. delivered at 6.18 Bar.
Contaminated steam evaporated from the product, being unsuitable for direct compression, is condensed in a shell and tube reboiler, producing clean steam.
This is then mixed with clean flash steam from the dryer delivered via the steam condensate return, and compressed at an 8:1 ratio by an electrically driven twin stage, twin screw compressor.
The compressor's motive power requirement is 760 KW: it is capable of coping with steam sufficient to evaporate 3.5 t of moisture/h. The remainder of heating steam will be provided by the natural gas boiler.
