Objective
To manufacture lightweight aggregate using a process where hot P.F.A. (Pulverised Fuel Ash) is reacted with slaked lime and formed into pellets.
Low grade sensible heat from P.F.A. heat of reaction and recoverable heat are utilized. The aggregate produced, will be used in an adjacent plant manufacturing lightweight building blocks by conventional techniques.
It is expected to achieve an energy saving of 3300 TOE/year at project level.
Payback time is estimated at 1 year.
The process is innovative utilising the pozzolanic properties of a lime P.F.A. mixture when cured under known and controlled conditions.
P.F.A. available at 150.000 tonnes/a at project site, is transported by sealed road tanker and discharged into storage silos by static compressors.
Lime is provided by slaking quicklime. Heat generated by the compressors and that produced during slaking is used in the process. A mixture of PFA and lime is granulated and passed to the curing silos. It is anticipated that 97% of the PFA will be converted into aggregate.
The cured granules are discharged to the block manufacturing process using conventional block machines and methods.
The energy requirements of the novel process are estimated at 0,3 GJ/t aggregate while those of existing techniques are approximately 1.0 GJ/t aggregate.
The production rate of the lightweight aggregate plant will be 200.00 t/year.
Unlike most existing processes of manufacturing lightweight aggregate, the novel process is completely free of atmospheric pollution. In addition, the project offers a route for disposing of PFA presently being dumped.
A UK target of 17.000 TOE/yr is set while for EEC 170.000 TOE/yr economy is projected.
