ENERGY SAVING CALCINATION OF ANODES

Objective

To build a demonstration plant for the calcination of anodes (to be used in the electrolysis of aluminium) in tunnel-type continuous ovens, with energy saving both at the production stage and while in use.

To build a demonstration plant consisting of two tunnel anodes to calcinate ovens with the following objectives:
- decrease in energy consumption through improvementof the thermal cycle.
- increased recovery of energy through adequate heat recovery equipments.
- energy saving in the use of the anodes thanks to improved physico-chemical characteristics of the finished anodes.
- reduced pollution in the calcination steps.
- improved working environment for the personnel.
- lower operating costs.
The pilot plant will be built in the Alusuisse Italia SpA plant in Porto Marghera (Venezia).
For a production of 72,000 t/yr of anodes (having each a length of 1,150 mm) the savings are:
- saving in production 5,134 TOE/yr
- saving in use 6,537 TOE/yr
Total saving 11,671 TOE/yr
The plant will consist of a pre-heating tunnel and a tunnel-type oven with the necessary conveyors. In the second stage a second calcination tunnel will be added to reach the 72,000 TOE/yr capacity.

The first stage started on 1.10.85 and is due to be completed by 30.11.87; it will include the development of the energy saving thermal cycle. The building of the second phase (second tunnel) is scheduled to start 1.11.87 and to be completed by 31.3.89.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
