ENERGY SAVING INDIVIDUAL PROCESSES ASSEMBLED IN A PLANT FOR FINE CERAMIC CHINA PRODUCTION

Objective

The aim of this project is to save on energy in the tableware manufacturing process by:
- reducing to a single firing process the conventional three-stage method
- recovering the heat used in the kiln.
According to the second progress report (for the 1.1.85 to 30.6.85 period), and covering the preliminary project planning stage, intensive preparatory work has been carried out, and realisation and detail planning has been stepped-up.
Preliminary planning entails the following:
- drawing-up of a network plan;
- checks on the site chosen and area infrastructure;
- budgeting and provision of own resources;
- official sanctioning procedure;
- basis engineering and definition of planning stages.
Based on the results of project analysis, a rough draft network plan has been worked out, and is now being improved. In addition, a first analysis of geological tests indicate difficulties. With regard to the official sanctioning procedure, in collaboration with a steel construction company a preliminary concept has been arrived at which envisages a facility with integrated high level shelving: it is hoped this will form the basis of the official sanctioning procedure, and upon reception of results of the site examination, the contractor will apply for building permission.
As far as the three key technological processes (decorating/pressing; firing and product handling) are concerned, planning work is on schedule.
Progress is reported as satisfactory on all these points. With regard to the Saggars, attempts are being made to produce test pieces on a trial press for durability. The product developed by the contractor, for which a patent has been applied, appears to be superior to others available. However, the problem of manufacture remains unresolved.
At present ceramic tableware is shaped from ceramic slip (32% moisture) or from plastic bodies (22% moisture). The pieces are then dried. Then they undergo a triple firing process: biscuit firing, gloss firing and firing after decoration.
In the new process the tableware pieces are pressed in a dry condition (2% moisture). Shaping, by isostatic dry pressing, and decoration are both done at the same time. The pieces are then glazed: a single firing process is required.
Efforts will be made to recover the heat used in the kiln.
