MCFC POWER PLANTS - DEMONSTRATION OF A HOT MODULE QUALIFICATION MODEL; CONSTRUCTION, INSTALLATION AND START OF A HOT MODULE

Objetivo

INSTALLATION, START AND DEMONSTRATION OF A MCFC HOT MODULE QUALIFICATION MODEL, FULL SIZE with the aim to demonstrate the feasibility and reliable operation of all components and subsystems necessary for operation of a complete MCFC Plant building unit with the exception of a real stack. In particular, the Hot Module including the complete cathode recycle loop, the hot gas blowers and the catalytic burner and all other components for the operation of a stack shall be demonstrated.
CONSTRUCTION AND INSTALLATION OF A MCFC HOT MODULE SYSTEM VERIFIER, FULL SIZE, 300 CELLS IN THE RANGE OF 280 kW. The system verifier is considered to comprise the proven subsystems and components of the Qualification Model in connection to a real stack. The System Verifier will be the first fully functional unit fed by natural gas producing electricity and heat.
CONSTRUCTION OF THE SITE INSTALLATIONS FOR THE TESTS AT RUHRGAS FACILITIES, DORSTEN, DE.
The design of both the Qualification Model and the System Verifier is based on the results and the descrpitive package of the "Engineering of a Direct Fuel Cell Power plant, full size, 300 cells in the range of 280 kW", project EI/1/92/DE.
Start-up procedure successfully completed. Detailled results under evaluation.
Based on the system designs and their optimization performed in earlier projects and in accordance with an optimization of the mechanical, thermal and gas flow structures of a typical MCFC energy conversion plant a highly integrated nucleus forming the repeating and suitable for serial production unit of any MCFC power and cogeneration plant has been developed by the European ARGE MCFC Development, which is a consortium of MTU (DE), RWE (DE), Ruhrgas (DE) and Haldor Topsoe (DK). The unit is called the 'MCFC HOT MODULE' and consists of all fuel cell related and repeating components within one thermally insulated vessel so that all outside components are application- and customer related. Additionally, all Hot Module components have similar operating temperatures and the insulated vessel forms simultaneously the housing and the transport container.
This concept minimizes the number and the complexity of the interfaces between the customer's plant and the fuel cell system on one handand between the BoP of the fuel cell system and the Hot Module on the other.
Typically, the MCFC stack, the catalytic burner for the anode tail gas, the cathode loop heat exchanger, and the hot gas blower are integrated in one Hot Module. Several Hot Modules can be placed in an environment of non-repeating subsystems, e.g. fuel processor, grid connection, heat utilization and control system and will form in that way an energy conversion plant of the required size. The Hot Module concept opens the way to substantial reductions of the complexity of fuel cell systems and to a commercially viable cost perspective.
Within this project an important step towards the commercialization of this principle will be done by THE QUALIFICATION AND DEMONSTRATION OF A FULL SIZE HOT MODULE QUALIFIER, THE CONSTRUCTION AND INSTALLATION READY FOR OPERATION OF A FULL SIZE MCFC HOT MODULE SYSTEM VERIFIER AND THE PREPARATION OF THE NECESSARY TEST FACILITY FOR ITS OPERATION AND DEMONSTRATION.
