STEAM INJECTION GAS TURBINE COMBINED HEAT AND POWER CONTRACT

Objetivo

To demonstrate the technical and economical viability of running a Combined Heat and Power Plant at variable thermal outputs while maintaining a constant electrical output and high efficiency. When steam demand is high supplementary firing will be used to increase output. When steam demand is low a novel approach will be used. Excess steam will be injected into the gas turbine to increase electrical output rather than wasting the energy by exhausting through a bypass damper as is the current practice. Steam and electricity will be sold to Dairygold Co-Op, on whose premises the plant will be located.
The plant will be owned by C.H.P. Ltd. an independent power company.
The plant provides over 90% of the site's annual steam demand and 100% of its electricity requirements, with surplus electricity generated being sold to the national grid (ESB).
The plant performance is very satisfactory :
Average Electrical Efficiency : 28%
Average Overall Efficiency : 85%
Average Overall Availability : 97%
This is a feature of CHP Ltd operations which they intend to standardise for further such installations in the future.
The project entails building a Combined Heat and Power Plant at Dairygold Co-Op, Mallow, Co. Cork, Ireland. The main plant items will be a Centrax 501 Gas Turbine driving a Brush Alternator producing 4,500 kW of electricity. The gas turbine will exhaust into a Foster Wheeler Waste Heat Boiler producing 23,000 lb/hr. of steam without supplementary firing and up to 45,000 lbs/hr. with supplementary firing.
Revenue will be derived by selling the steam to Dairygold and from selling the electricity required by Dairygold to meet site requirements and excess electricity to the E.S.B. Demand for steam varies from approx. 22,500 lb/hr. to approx. 48,000 lbs/hr. The production of steam will match this demand, with the existing boilers at the Dairygold plant being used to provide standby peaking capacity. Production of electricity will be maintained at the generator base load. The electrical demand at Dairygold, Mallow, is approx. 20,000,000 kWhrs. per annum and the peak demand is 3,700 kW. The gas turbine and waste heat boiler will be fuelled by Natural Gas, a supply of which is available on site (currently being used to fuel the existing boilers).
A novel mode of operation will be used. When demand for steam is low, excess steam will be injected into the turbine. The effect of this will be to reduce the amount of fuel required to produce the same amount of electric power. This represents a further increase in plant efficiency. Steam injection also reduces Nox emissions.
