Objective
THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO CONSTRUCT A TUBULAR LOOP PHOTOBIOREACTOR, AND TO EVALUATE ITS EFFICIENCY IN THE LONDON CLIMATE AS A MEANS OF STORING SOLAR ENERGY BY ALGAL MASS PRODUCTION. ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF PRODUCING A BIOMASS RICH IN LIPID WAS TO BE INVESTIGATED.
A PHOTOBIOREACTOR CONSISTING OF 25M PYREX TUBING OF 1CM BORE (0.25 SQ.M) WAS CONSTRUCTED AND HOUSED IN A GLASSHOUSE OUTDOORS. THE PHOTOBIOREACTOR WAS INSTRUMENTED TOGETHER WITH A MICRO-COMPUTER FOR BOTH PROCESS CONTROL AND DATA-LOGGING. ACCURATE TEMPERATURE AND PH CONTROL WERE ACHIEVED.
THE MICRO-ALGA SPIRULA PLATENSIS WAS GROWN UNDER LIGHT-LIMITED CONDITIONS IN ORDER TO TEST THE SYSTEM. THE PHOTOBIOREACTOR HAS OPERATED CONTINUOUSLY FOR 4 MONTHS AND A STEADY STATE BIOMASS CONCENTRATION OF 10G DRY WEIGHT L TO THE POWER OF MINUS 1 WAS ACHIEVED. THE MAXIMUM OUTPUT RATE WAS 2G DRY WEIGHT M TO THE POWER OF MINUS 2 H TO THE POWER OF MINUS 1. THE MAXIMUM PHOTOSYNTHETIC EFFICIENCY ACHIEVED UNDER LIGHT-LIMITED CONDITIONS WAS 0.0181G DRY WEIGHT (KG) TO THE POWER OF MINUS 1.
THE FREEZE DRIED BIOMASS WAS FRACTIONATED INTO LIPID, CARBOHYDRATE AND PROTEIN APPROXIMATELY IN THE PROPORTIONS, 1:2:7 BY WEIGHT.
THE OBJECTIVES WERE ACHIEVED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT, BY MEANS OF THE TUBULAR REACTOR, ALGAL CULTIVATION WITH MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY OF BIOMASS PRODUCTION CAN BE ACHIEVED UNDER THE LONDON CLIMATIC CONDITIONS.
