Objective
THE PRESENT STUDY ON SOLID-LIQUID MIXTURES REPRESENTS THE FIRST STEP OF A MORE COMPREHENSIVE WORK TO BE EXECUTED FURTHER ON. IN THIS PHASE, THE WORK WILL BEGIN WITH A SERIES OF DETAILED ANALYSES ON THE CHARCOAL (WOOD COAL) TYPICALLY PRODUCED BY ITALENERGIE S.P.A. AND ON THE OIL SIMULTANEOUSLY PRODUCED IN THE SAME PLANT; COAL ANALYSES WILL INCLUDE, AMONG OTHERS, MEASUREMENTS OF THE OXYGEN CONTENT AND THE CHEMICAL-PHYSICAL STRUCTURE OF THE MATERIAL.
OIL ANALYSES WILL COMPRISE ALSO MEASUREMENTS OF PHENOLS CONTENT, HARD VACUUM DISTILLATION, VISCOSITY VS.TEMPERATURE ETC.
COAL DUSTS HAVING A PROPER PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION WILL BE DISPERSED INTO THE OIL IN ORDER TO FORM MIXTURES IN THE RANGE OF BETWEEN 20% SOLID - 80% LIQUID AND, IF POSSIBLE, 50% SOLID - 50% LIQUID.
THE SLUDGE FLUIDIZATION WILL BE ACHIEVED BY ADDING A SOLVENT OF HIGH SOLUBILITY FOR THE PYROLYSIS OIL OR, ALTERNATIVELY, BY ADDING H2O AND AN EMULSIFIER-DISPERSANT ADDITIVE (10%
THE MIXTURE L.V.H. WILL VARY, FOR THE TWO CASES, BETWEEN 5800 AND 6500 KCAL/KG.
THE DISPERSING TECHNIQUE WILL THEN BE EXAMINED.
ON THE OBTAINED MIXTURES THE RHEOLOGICAL BEHAVIOR, INCLUDING STABILITY IN THE TIME, WILL BE ANALYZED.
IF THE TWO BIOMASS PYROLYSIS PRODUCTS, OIL AND CHAR, ARE MIXED TOGETHER UNDER A 1 : 1 RATIO WITHOUT ADDITION OF ANY DILUENT, THE MIXTURES OBTAINED RESULT TO BE EXTREMELY THICK DUE TO THE VERY PITCHY NATURE OF PYROLYTIC OIL.
THESE PRODUCTS APPEAR THEN MORE SUITABLE MATERIALS FOR BRIQUETTE THAN LIQUID FUELS. THE ADDITION OF WATER AND SURFACTANTS DOES NOT IMPROVE MIXTURE FLUIDITY. THE REQUIREMENTS FOR PRODUCING LIQUID FUELS OUT OF THE PYROLYSIS PRODUCTS CAN BE FULFILLED WITH THE PREPARATION OF TWO TYPES OF MIXTURE SEPARATED FROM EACH OTHER, BEING ONE BASED ON OIL, THE OTHER ON CHAR. THE PYROLYTIC OIL-BASED MIXTURE CONSISTS OF AN OIL DILUTION WITH METHANOL UNDER AN 85 : 15 RATIO (BY WEIGHT) IN ORDER TO OBTAIN A LIQUID FUEL WITH A VISCOSITY OF 300 : 500 CP AT 50 CELSIUS DEGREES. THE CHAR-BASED MIXTURE CAN BE PRODUCED WITH THE RESORT TO DIVERSE LIQUID CARRIERS SUCH AS WATER, WATER + METHANOL, METHANOL, ISOBUTHYL ALCOHOL. THIS CWM IS INTEGRATIVE OF THE OIL-METHANOL MIXTURE. UNDER LIGHT STIRRING BOTH OIL-METHANOL AND CHAR-WATER MIXTURES REMAIN SUFFICIENTLY STABLE TO ENABLE PUMPING AND BURNER FEEDING. THE MIXTURES PREPARATION PLANTS SHOULD ANYWAY BE SET UP NEXT TO THE FUEL INPUT AREA, WITH INPUT LINES AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE.
