Objective
Originally it was envisaged that fuel wood could be grown economically on poor quality soil, of which large areas occur in several European Community countries. In the past, a surplus of many agricultural products has developed, not only in the European Community countries but also in the United States and Scandinavia. It is difficult to find an economic use for this surplus land. One possibility which must now be seriously considered is energy crops including short rotation forestry (SRF).

THE EXISTING TRIALS WERE REFURBISHED; WEED CONTROL AND FERTILISATION WERE CARRIED OUT WHERE NECESSARY. POORLY YIELDING CLONES WERE REPLACED BY BETTER ONES; BIRCH BY POPLAR DONK, AND S.VITTELINA BY POPLAR BARN. SOME TRIALS WERE HARVESTED IN THE AUTUMN OF 1986 BUT THE RESULTS HAVE NOT BEEN STATISTICALLY ANALYSED AT THE TIME OF REPORTING.
THREE NEW TRIALS WERE LAID DOWN ON BETTER SOILS, USING CLONES WHICH HAD PREVIOUSLY GIVEN GOOD RESULTS.
A TRIAL OF SIXTY NORTH AMERICAN WILLOW CLONES OF THE SPECIES SALIX AMYGDALOIDES, S.DISCOLOR S.ERIOCEPHALA S.LUCIDA AND S.NIGRA WAS ESTABLISHED IN THE SPRING 1986. THIRTY WILLOW CLONES OF EUROPEAN ORIGIN, MANY OF THEM VARIANTS OF SALIX AQUATICA GIGANTEA, WERE PLANTED OUT IN ANOTHER TRIAL. EIGHT OF THE MOST PROMISING CLONES OF POPLAR FROM A LARGER OBSERVATION TRIAL, WERE SET OUT IN A TRIAL AT OAK PARK.
POPULUS TT32 GROW IN POTS WERE INNOCULATED WITH TWENTY SPECIES-STRAINS OF FUNGI, AND TRANSFERRED TO A LOW FERTILITY SITE ON PEATLAND IN 1984.
EARLY IN AUGUST A SEVERE ATTACK OF RUST MELAMPSORA SPP. OCCURED AT ALL CENTRES EXCEPT BALLINAMORE. HOWEVER SOME OF THE SYNONMS OF S.AQUATICA PLANTED IN THE SPRING OF 1986, APPEARED TO BE IMMUNE TO THE INFECTION. APART FROM THE USUAL ATTACK OF LEAF BEETLE (PHYLLODECTA VULGATISSIMA) ON SOME OF THE SALIX SPP., THERE WAS A SEVERE ATTACK OF TORTRIX MOTH, A PEST WELL KNOWN TO ORCHARDS, BUT NOT HITHERTO ENCOUNTERED IN WILLOWS. IT IS EXPECTED THAT OVER A PERIOD OF TIME NATURAL ENEMIES WILL DEVELOP. BIRDS ARE AMONGST THE MOST IMPORTANT OF THESE NATURAL ENEMIES. A SURVEY OF THE BIRD SPECIES INHABITING THE SHORT ROTATION FORESTRY SITE AT CLONSAST, CO. OFFALY HAS BEEN BEGUN.
