Objective THIS PROJECT AIMS AT SELECTING FOREST TREE SPECIES, PROVENANCES, PROGENIES OR CLONES FOR SHORT TERM BIOMASS PRODUCTION ON MARGINAL AND GOOD FOREST AND AGRICULTURAL LAND. IT ALSO AIMS AT STUDYING DIFFERENT TYPES OF CULTIVATION PROCESSES LEADING EITHER TO A SINGLE PRODUCTION OF WOODY RAW MATERIAL FOR ENERGY AND INDUSTRY OR TO A DOUBLE PRODUCTION OF WOOD FOR ENERGY AND INDUSTRY ON THE ONE HAND AND OF TIMBER ON THE OTHER HAND. SPECIES INVOLVED ARE CONIFERS - SITKA SPRUCE, DOUGLAS FIR, SUGI, HYBRID LARCH -, AND BROADLEAVES - POPLARS, WILLOWS, ALDERS AND RED OAK-. SELECTION AND GENETIC IMPROVEMENT INCLUDE FIELD TESTS WHERE THE ADAPTATION AND GROWTH OF THE DIFFERENT POPULATIONS ARE COMPARED, SELECTION OF OUTSTANDING GENOTYPES FOR FURTHER USE AFTER VEGETATIVE PROPAGATION, AND INTERSPECIFIC HYBRIDIZATION TO LOOK FOR HYBRYD VIGOUR (POPLARS, ALDERS). TO STUDY OF CULTURAL TECHNIQUES AIM AT COMPARING INTENSIVE AND EXTENSIVE PROCESSES AND THEIR EFFICIENCY IN TERMS OF OUTPUT-INPUT RATIO, AND AT PROPOSING MODELS LEADING TO A DOUBLE PURPOSE TOTALLY MECHANIZED FORESTRY : MODIFIED COPPICE-WITH-STANDARD AND HIGH-FOREST PRODUCING SUCCESSIVELY INDUSTRY-WOOD AND TIMBER. MOST RESULT ARE JUVENILE AND CONCERN WORK INITIATED DURING PREVIOUS CONTRACTS. ON POOR LAND HIGH YIELD CANNOT BE OBTAINED EVEN WITH PERFORMANT TREE VARIETIES AND INTENSIVE CULTIVATION TECHNIQUES. IN SUCH SITUATIONS EXTENSIVE CULTIVATION TECHNIQUES ARE NOT WORTH WHILE FOR SHORT-TERM FORESTRY. PROMISING INTERSPECIFIC HYBRIDS WERE OBTAINED BETWEEN DIFFERENT ALDER SPECIES INVOLVING ALNUS RUBRA, A.INCANA A.CORDATA.
