PRODUCTION AND UTILIZATION OF SYNTHETIC LIQUID FUELS.

Objective

THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP INFORMATION WHICH WILL LEAD INTO THE USE OF WOOD WASTES OR MEDIUM ROTATION WOODED BIOMASS IN THE PRODUCTION OF FUEL COMPONENTS TO BE BLENDED INTO THE GASOLINE POOL. THESE COMPONENTS WILL BE PRODUCED FROM LIQUIDS DERIVED FROM BIOMASS PYROLYSIS.

TO ACCOMPLISH THE PROJECT OBJECTIVES THE FOLLOWING PHASES WILL BE USED: (A) RAW MATERIAL ANALYSIS. (B) KINETICS AND PYROLYSIS. (C) LIQUID ANALYSIS AND COMPONENT SEPARATION. (D) PHENOL ALKYLATION.

SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS WAS MADE IN PREPARING BIOMASS SAMPLES (DERIVED FROM FIR WOOD) WITH A SPECIFIC PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION (300-425 MICROMETRES) AND TESTING THEM IN A FLUID BED REACTOR SYSTEM. THE HEART OF THE UNIT, SHOWN IN THE ATTACHED FIGURE IS A STAINLESS STEEL REACTOR VESSEL-4CM IDX1M HEIGHT. THE REACTOR VESSEL IS EQUIPPPED WITH A POROUS PLATE DISTRIBUTOR THROUGH WHICH GAS IS USED TO FLUIDIZE PARTICLES OF SILICA SAND. A GLASS CONTAINER, FILLED WITH ABOUT 0.5 GR OF SAMPLE, WAS USED TO INTRODUCE THE BIOMASS INTO THE HIGH TEMPERATURE BED.
THE PRODUCED GASES AND LIQUIDS WERE COLLECTED AND ANALYZED USING STANDARD ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES. THE YIELD OF LIQUID TAR REACHES A MAXIMUM VALUE, OF ABOUT 40% WT, BETWEEN 450 AND 500 CELSIUS DEGREES. GASEUS YIELDS WERE ALSO ESTABLISHED AS A FUNCTION OF TEMPERATURE FOR THE FOLLOWING COMPOUNDS: CO, CO2, H2, CH4, C2H4, C2H6, TOTAL C3 HYDROCARBONS, TOTAL C4 HYDROCARBONS, C5H12 AND C6H6.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
