Objetivo
THE DEVELOPMENT WORK IS INTENDED TO DEMONSTRATE THE GENERAL ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY OF USING ABSORPTION HEAT PUMPS TO USE INDUSTRIAL WASTE HEAT. IN ADDITION, THE WORK SHOULD PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT THE DYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR OF TWO-STAGE ABSORPTION CIRCUITS, THE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE SPREAD THAT CAN BE ACHIEVED IN PRACTICE, AND THE FLUID AND HEAT TRANSFER IN SUCH PROCESSES.
LASTLY, THE FINDINGS SHOULD MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE OPTIMUM DESIGN FOR APPARATUS AND BIG INDUSTRIAL-SCALE PLANTS.
This project tried to develop a 2-stage high temperature absorption heat pump with an output temperture level between 100 C and 130 C. The 2-stage absorption process uses the working pair lithium bromide and water.
The experimental plant was designed for a useful heat output capacity of 50 kW. For design purposes the calculation was based on an evaporation temperature of 60 C and a maximum solution temperature in the desorbers of 155 C. The difference in concentration between the rich and the poor solution was chosen to be 4% lithium bromide. For these parameters the output heat temperature was calculated to be 114 C. The new plant concept is based on a compact 3-drum horizontal tank system where the 2 apparatuses working on the same pressure level are combined in one vessel.
In the first 3 test runs useful heat temperatures of 98 C, 109 C and 130 C were recorded. The internal heat output of the heat pump process was between 26 kW and 39 kW. Due to large surface heat losses the turnover of useful heat in the steam drum only reached between 19 kW and 32 kW.
While running the experimental plant at high desorption temperatures leakages in the solution piping system appeared. Therefore the experiments could not continue as planned but had to be terminated.
From the evaluation of the experiments certain needs for optimization were determined. The installation of a solution pump in the second stage of the process and the conversion of the submerged desorber of the second stage to an irrigated heat exchanger are required. Furthermore the level meters have to be reconstructed, the motor driven valves should be equipped with a pneumatic drive and a small vacuum pump should be installed in the automatic vacuum system. Improving the heat insulation of the test rig to minimize surface heat losses is also necessary.
THE RESEARCH PROJECT INCLUDES THE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF A PROCEDURE TO USE WASTE HEAT TO PRODUCE PROCESS HEAT BY MEANS OF A TWO-STAGE ABSORPTION HEAT PUMP. THE AIM OF THE WORK IS TO FURTHER DEVELOP THE PROCESS IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT CAN BE GENERALLY USED FOR USING INDUSTRIAL WASTE HEAT TO PRODUCE PROCESS HEAT AT A TEMPERATURE OF UP TO 130C. FURTHERMORE, THE FINDINGS SHOULD PROVIDE THE BASIS FOR DESIGNING A LARGE-SCALE INDUSTRIAL PLANT. TO THIS END, CHANGES WILL HAVE TO BE MADE TO THE EXISTING PILOT PLANTS, SUCH AS MODIFICATION TO THE CONTROL GEAR AND DATA COLLECTION SYSTEM. A FOLLOWING TEST AND EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAMME WILL DETERMINE THE EFFICIENCY OF THE SYSTEM UNDER THE CONDITIONS MOST GENERALLY FOUND IN PRACTICE.
