MATERIALS RESEARCH FOR ADVANCED SOLID STATE FUEL CELLS - AN ANGLO/DANISH/FRENCH RESEARCH PROJECT.

Objectif

THIS ANGLO-DANISH-FRENCH RESEARCH PROGRAMME IS A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT BETWEEN THE FOLLOWING CONTRACTORS :
DK : ENERGY RESEARCH LABORATORY, ODENSE + SUBCONTRACTORS
F : SORAPEC, PARIS + SUBCONTRACTORS
UK : INORGANIC CHEMISTRY LABORATORY, OXFORD
IN THE FOLLOWING REFERRED TO AS DK, F, AND UK RESPECTIVALY

TO DEVELOP STABLE PROTON CONDUCTING ELECTRODE AND ELECTROLYTE MATERIALS FOR USE IN AMBIENT TO MEDIUM TEMPERATURE SOLID STATE FUEL CELLS OF NEW SIMPLE DESIGN. COMPARED TO EXISTING HIGH TEMPERATURE SOLID STATE FUEL CELLS WITH ION CONDUCTING ELECTROLYTE THE INNOVATION OF AN AMBIENT TO MEDIUM TEMPERATURE CELL WILL ENABLE HIGHER THERMODYNAMIC EFFICIENCY AND LOWER COSTS. THE MEDIUM TEMPERATURE VERSION (200-300 CELSIUS DEGREES) PROVIDES THE PROSPECTS FOR A CONVERSION DEVICE WITH BUILD-IN REFORMER FOR USE IN TRANSPORT (INDIRECT METHANOL CELL).

THE PROJECT ORGANISATION INCLUDES 1 PROJECT MANAGER, 3 PROJECT CO-ORDINATORS (ONE FOR EACH CONTRACTOR DK, F AND UK), AND 3 PROJECT LEADERS (ONE FOR EACH OF 3 SUB-PROJECTS). DK IS RESPONSABLE FOR THE TOTAL PROJECT CO-ORDINATION AND FOR THE REPORTING TO THE EEC.

CONTRACTOR RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MAIN PARTS OF WORK IN EACH SUBJECT AREA ARE LISTED AFTER THE SUBJECT AS DK, F OR UK. CONTRACTORS, WHO ARE ONLY ONLY RESPONSIBLE FOR A MINOR PART OF WORK IN EACH SUBJET AREA, ARE LISTED AFTER THE SUBJECT AS DK, F OR UK.

SUB-PROJECT 1 DK,F (EN3E006200) :

1. PREPARATION OF PROTON CONDUCTORS:
ALL THE MATERIALS WILL BE CHARACTERIZED VERY CAREFULLY BY THE FOLLOWING METHODS:
- CHEMICAL ANALYSIS
- PHASE ANALYSIS
- THERMOGRAVIMETRY
- CONDUCTIVITY MEASUREMENTS
- ELECTROCHEMICAL STABILITY ANALYSIS
2. LABORATORY CELL DESIGN:
- DETERMINATION OF MATERIAL
- STABILITY UNDER PROTON CONDUCTION FOR TEMPERATURE UP TO 300 CELSIUS DEGREES AND 200 BAR
- FABRICATION OF DENSE GAS HIGH PROTON CONDUCTING FILM
- EVALUATION OF ELECTROLYTE MATERIAL
- FABRICATION AND TESTING OF CELLS WITH SELECTED MATERIAL
3. FUEL CELL APPLICATION AND ASSESSMENT STUDY

SUB-PROJECT 2 (EN3E006700) :

1. OXYGEN ELECTRODE. UK,(DK):
- THE INVESTIGATION OF SELECTED METALLIC OXIDES FOR BOTH STABILITY AND O2 REDUCTION ACTIVITY IN SOLID OR LIQUID ACIDIC ELECTROLYTES
- THE INVESTIGATION OF SELECTED TRANSITION-METAL MACROCYCLE COMPLEXES CHEMISORBED ON TO AN ACTIVE METALLIC SUBSTRATE FOR BOTH STABILITY AND O2 REDUCTION ACTIVITY IN SOLID OR LIQUID ACIDIC ELECTROLYTES
- THE INVESTIGATION OF SELECTED METALLIC SUBSTANCES THAT CAN ACT IN ACIDIC MEDIA AS BOTH STABLE AND ACTIVE SUPPORTS FOR CATALYTIC OXIDES AND/OR MACROCYCLE MOLECULES
2. FUEL ELECTRODE. F, (DK):
- CHOICE OF THE ELECTRODE COMPONENTS AND TESTS PARAMETERS (TEMPERATURE, PRESSURE) RESULTING FROM THE ELECTROLYTE NATURE
- MANUFACTURE OF THE CATALYST COMPOSED ESSENTIALLY WITH NOBLE METALS USED IN THE ELETRODE DESCRIBED ABOVE
- INFLUENCE OF THE BINDER IF ANY, ON THE CURRENT COLLECTOR, THE CATALYST NATURE AND QUANTITY, AND ON THE ELECTRODE MANUFACTURE PARAMETERS.

SUB-PROJECT 3 (EN3E007000):
1. LABORATORY CELL DESIGN IN TESTING. DK,F:
- FABRICATION OF LABORATORY CELLS. CELLS BASED ON PROTON CONDUCTORS FROM ALL THE CATEGORIES GIVEN IN SUB-PROJECT 1 AND EQUIPPED WITH STANDARD, COMPOSITE ELECTRODES WILL BE FABRICATED
- DE-CONDUCTIVITY MEASUREMENTS IN THE APPROPRIATE TEMPERATURE RANGE AND ATMOSPHERE. ELECTROCHEMICAL EVALUATION OF PROTON ION CONDUCTORS
- INVESTIGATION OF INTERFACE PROBLEMS
- FABRICATION AND TESTING OF CELLS WITH SELECTED PROTON CONDUCTORS AND NON-STANDARD ELECTRODES
- POST MORTEM EXAMINATION OF CELLS.
2. FUEL CELL APPLICATION AND ASSESSMENT STUDIES. DK, (F),(UK):
- APPLICATION ASSESSMENT. AN ASSESSMENT WILL BE MADE OF THE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION OF FUEL CELLS FOR VARIOUS APPLICATIONS. CONSIDERATION WILL BE GIVEN TO THE REQUIRED PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS FOR : STATIONARY APPLICATIONS AND TRACTION APPLICATION. COMPARISON WILL BE MADE WITH OTHER PROJECTED FORMS OF ENERGY CONVERSION AND STORAGE
- FUEL CELL ASSESSMENT. THE TECHNICAL LITERATURE ON FUEL CELLS UNDER DEVELOPMENT THROUGHOUT THE WORLD AS WELL AS RESULTS FROM THE PROJECT WILL BE MONITORED AND ASSESSED. A THERMODYNAMIC ASSESSMENT OF TOTAL HEAT MANAGEMENT INCLUDING REFORMER, ELECTROLYSIS, POWER CONDITIONING, AND FUEL CELL UNITS WILL BE CARRIED OUT.
