DEVELOPMENT OF OPTIMISED CO2-REMOVAL FOR ALKALINE HYDROGEN-AIR FUEL CELL TRACTION APPLICATIONS.

Objective

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE R&D WORK IS TO DEVELOP AND PROVE THE PRACTICAL FEASIBILITY OF A COMPACT MODULAR AND EFFICIENT CO2 FROM AIR REMOVAL DEVICE, WHICH CAN BE INTEGRATED EASILY WITH ALKALINE HYDROGENE-AIR FUEL CELL STICKS, THE LATTER BEING USED FOR PROVIDING POWER TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES.

THE R&D WORK WOULD ESSENTIALLY CONSIST OF THREE PHASES:

1.- THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CO2-REMOVAL DEVICE.
A) THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE POROUS ABSORPTION LAYER:
MADE WITH SIMILAR MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY AS ELENCO 'S POROUS ELECTRODE LAYERS, THESE LAYERS WILL BE A " SANDWICH " OF TWO POROUS FILMS, BASED ON PTFE: ONE TO STOP THE ALKALINE ABSORBENT OF GOING INTO THE AIR CHAMBERS, AND THE OTHER ONE ENSURING A LARGE CONTACT AREA BETWEEN LIQUID AND GAS PHASES THROUGH A SUITABLY MIXED HYDROPHILIC - HYDROPHOBIC POROSITY;

B) THE INTEGRATION INTO A COMPACT MODULE:
THE ADVANCED FUEL CELL MODULE MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY, DEVELOPED BY ELENCO, WILL HAVE TO BE SOMEWHAT ADAPTED TO COMPLY WITH THE DIFFERENT NATURE AND COMPOSITION OF THE CO2-ABSORPTION LAYERS AS COMPARED WITH THE FUEL CELL ELECTRODES.

2.- TESTING PROGRAMMES.
ON THE ONE HAND THE TESTING OF THE CO2-ABSORPTION DEVICES DEVELOPED, AND ON THE OTHER HAND TESTS OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE REMAINING CO2-CONTENT ON THE ACTUAL FUEL CELL PERFORMANCE, THE REMAINING CO2-CONTENT BEING ONE OF THE KEY PARAMETERS OF THE WHOLE PROJECT.

3.- ASSESSMENT AND OPTIMIZATION.
IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE TEST PROGRAMMES, A PERMANENT ASSESSMENT AND, ULTIMATELY, AN OPTIMIZATION OF THE DEVICE IN TERMS OF WEIGHT, VOLUME, COST AND OVERALL ECONOMICS WILL BE CARRIED OUT.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
