IMPROVED DESIGN FOR GLASS MELTING KILN

Objective

THE OBJECTIVES ARE :

A) TO DEVELOP A COMPUTER CODE FOR THE SIMULATION AND DESIGN OF INDUSTRIAL GLASS KILN AND TO APPLY IT FOR ENGINEERING DESIGN OF GLASS MELTING KILNS.

B) TO CONDUCT A PROGRAMME OF EXPERIMENTS TO DETERMINE THE FLOW AND HEAT-TRANSFER CHARACTERISTICS IN THE GLASS MELTING KILN.

TO ACHIEVE THIS OBJECTIVE, COORDINATE EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAMME WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN THREE COUNTRIES (PORTUGAL, GERMANY, UNITED KINGDOM) AND THE RESULTS WILL BE USED TO GUIDE A FINAL EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAMME IN ONE OF THE FURNACES OF THE PORTUGUESE COMPANY, METAL. THE BASIS FOR THE NUMERICAL DESIGN PROCEDURE WILL BE PERFORMED IN LISBON AND FURTHER DEVELOPED IN THE THREE COUNTRIES.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CALCULATION METHOD IS INNOVATED IN THAT NOVEL NUMERICAL PROCEDURES WILL BE REQUIRED TO DEAL WITH THE OXYGEN-RICH ATMOSPHERE AND WITH THE SUBSTANTIAL RADIATION. THESE DEVELOPMENTS WILL BE GUIDED BY EXPERIMENTS PERFORMED IN THE THREE CONFIGURATIONS, NAMELY A LOW TEMPERATURE SIMULATION OF A GLASS FURNACE, A COMBUSTING AXISYMMETRICAL FURNACE AND IN A FULL SCALE GLASS FURNACE. THIS OVERALL APPROACH IS TOTALLY NEW TO THE GLASS-FURNACE INDUSTRY.

THE RD WORK IS DIVIDED IN TO THE FOLLOWING STEPS :

- COMPUTER CODE DEVELOPMENT
- COLD FLOW TESTING
- BURNER TESTING
- KILN TESTING
- COMPARISON OF CALCULATED AND MEASURED RESULTS
- PROVISIONS OF NEW DESIGNS AND DESIGN METHOD.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
