REDUCED NOX EMISSIONS & OTHER PHENOMENA IN FLUIDISED BED COMBUSTION

Objetivo

THE PROJECT OBJECTIVES ARE AS FOLLOWS :

1) TO INVESTIGATE THE REDUCTION OF NOX EMISSIONS BY STAGED COMBUSTION IN A SOLIDS CIRCULATING FLUIDIZED BED;
2) TO INVESTIGATE THE LIMESTONE UTILIZATION CHARACTERISTICS OF SOLID CIRCULATING FLUIDIZED BEDS NDAND THE EFFECT (IF ANY) OF LIMESTONE ADDITION ON NOX EMISSION;
3) TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECT OF FEEDSTOCK ON NOX EMISSION FROM A SOLIDS CIRCULATION FLUIDIZED BED;
4) TO DETERMINE HOW THE COMBUSTION EFFICIENCY VARIES DURING INVESTIGATIONS LISTED IN OBJECTIVES 1 TO 3 ABOVE;
5) TO INVESTIGATE FLUIDIZATION AND PULSATION CHARACTERISTICS OF FLUIDIZED BEDS.
Future emission standards will require levels of emission of nitrogen oxides that are below the relatively low levels produced by conventional fluidised bed combustion (FBC). One of the most promising methods for meeting these requirements is staged combustion. Consequently, the main aim was to investigate the conditions required to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides in a solids circulation boiler (SCB) rig, whilst maintaining a low level of carbon monoxide emission, good sulphur retention and a satisfactory combustion efficiency. In addition other FBC phenomena were investigated, such as pressure pulsation, residue characteristics, etc.
The results demonstrate that the 2 stage combustion, inherent in the SCB process, can achieve low nitrogen oxide emission levels. For a fixed calcium to sulphur molar ratio, emission levels rise as the degree of air staging increases and they are very sensitive to bed temperature. High unstable pulsation levels are unlikely and the use of staged combustion seems to have no significant adverse effect on the chemical composition or leaching behaviour of the ash residues.
CURRENT FLUIDIZED BED COMBUSTION TECHNOLOGY IS KNOWN TO RESTRICT NOX EMISSION FROM COMBUSTION SYSTEMS TO LEVELS WHICH WILL MEET CURRENT EC EMISSION STANDARDS. HOWEVER, IT IS EXPECTED THAT FUTURE STANDARDS WILL BECOME MORE SEVERE AND DEVELOPMENT WORK IS REQUIRED NOW TO ACHIEVE THE NECESSARY REDUCTION IN EMISSION LEVELS. STAGED COMBUSTION IS A PROVEN METHOD OF REDUCING NOX EMISSION BY REDUCING THE AVAILABILITY OF OXYGEN TO COMBINE WITH THE ATOMIC NITROGEN. THE SOLID CIRCULATION FLUIDIZED BED IS DESIGNED TO OPERATE WITH REDUCED AIR SUPPLY TO THE BED AND WITH SOLIDS TRANSPORT AIR, INJECTED ABOVE THE BED, TO SUPPORT SECONDARY COMBUSTION IN THE MIX ZONE. THIS IS IN EFFECT STAGED COMBUSTION. DUE TO PREVIOUS OPERATIONAL PROBLEMS WITH PRESSURE PULSATIONS IN SOME FLUIDIZED BED INSTALLATIONS, THE LIKELIHOOD OF PRESSURE PULSATIONS IN THE SYSTEM, WITH THE RANGE OF OPERATING PARAMETERS COVERED BY THIS PROJECT, WILL BE CHECKED.

THE ESSENTIAL RESULTS OF THIS PROJECT WILL BE THE DETERMINATION OF THE NOX EMISSION LEVELS FROM SOLID CIRCULATION FLUIDIZED BEDS OVER A RANGE OF OPERATING PARAMETERS. THIS WILL BE COMPARED WITH NOX FROM CONVENTIONAL AND STAGED COMBUST IN DEEP BUBBLING BEDS.

THE RESULTS ARE NEEDED TO ALLOW DETAILED DESIGNS OF HARDWARE SPECIFICALLY AMIMED AT LOW NOX APPLICATION TO BE PREPARED AND TO ALLOW PERFORMANCE FIGURES TO BE GIVE TO POTENTIAL CLIENTS.
