Objective
THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY IS TO HELP DETERMINE THE TYPES OF ATOMIZERS WHICH COULD BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH ATOMIZED-COAL BURNERS IN THE MW+ RANGE. THE COAL RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT OF BRITISH COAL (UK) HAS SUBMITTED A RESEARCH PROPOSAL CONCENTRATING MORE ON LOWER POWER RATINGS WHICH WOULD CALL FOR VERY DIFFERENT BUT NEVERTHELESS COMPLEMENTARY WORK. THUS, CERCHAR AND THE CRE HAVE DECIDED TO POOL THEIR EFFORTS SO THAT EACH CAN BENEFIT FROM THE PROGRESS MADE BY THE OTHER.
THE QUALITY OF COMBUSTION DEPENDS DIRECTLY ON THE QUALITY OF ATOMIZATION, BY THE TIME NEEDED TO HEAT UP AND VAPORIZE THE WATER. COMBUSTION EFFICIENCY DEPENDS ON THE SIZE OF ANY COAL AGGLOMERATES CONTAINED IN THE DROPS.
THERE IS CURRENTLY NO WAY OF PREDICTING THE QUALITY OF ATOMIZATION ON THE BASIS OF THE PROPERTIES OF THE FUEL. THE AIM OF THIS STUDY, THEREFORE, IS TO EXPLORE THIS AREA, ULTIMATELY WITH A VIEW TO ESTABLISHING CRITERIA FOR SELECTING THE CORRECT TYPE AND SIZE OF ATOMIZER ON THE BASIS OF THE TYPE OF FUEL, AND CONVERSELY TO CHARACTERIZE FUEL ON THE BASIS OF ITS ATOMIZATION PROPERTIES.
