BURNER IMPROVEMENTS FOR LIGNITE COMBUSTION

Objetivo

THE OBJECTIVE IS TO DEVELOP PROCEDURES, BASED ON CALCULATION METHODS AND RELATED EXPERIMENTS, TO AID THE DESIGN OF IMPROVED BURNER ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE COMBUSTION OF LIGNITE IN FURNACES.
A numerical method for pulverised lignite combustion in axisymmetric burners has been developed. Values were used to find an improved burner geometry for lignite combustion.

In order to establish a physical understanding of burners used in furnaces burning lignite. 3 inert particle-laden flows, were measured to quantify the dispersion and velocity characteristics of the particles as a function of the diameter and the mass loading of the particles. The flows studied were a round turbulent jet, a sudden expansion in a pipe and a swirling annular jet.
Further experiments were conducted in three scales of swirl burner with quarl throat diameter between 16 mm and 50.8 mm, using natural gas, kerosene and pulverized fuel. For gaseous combustion the purpose was to measure flame stability, velocity, temperature and species concentration as a function of swirl number, fuel injector and quarl geometry, air velocity and burner size.
Pulverized fuel, in the form of Greek lignite, English bituminous coal and Welsh anthracite, was burnt in the small swirl burner and in a 0.5 MW furnace, the seventh configuration. The purpose was to measure flame stability at the two scales of operation to measure the velocity and size characteristics and to develop the associated instrumentation for the latter.
LIGNITE FUEL, PRESENTLY AVAILABLE IN GREECE, IS BURNED IN POWER-GENERATING STATIONS AND IS LIKELY TO CONTRIBUTE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE REQUIRED POWER LOAD FOR MANY YEARS TO COME. THE RELATED POWER STATIONS MAKE USE OF BURNER ARRANGEMENTS WITH GEOMETRICAL CONFIGURATIONS DEVISED FOR THE COMBUSTION OF COAL AND, AS A RESULT, ARE NOT OPTIMIZED FOR THE BURNING OF LIGNITE.

TWO PRINCIPLE RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH OF THE PREVIOUS PARAGRAPH WILL BE A SMALL NUMBER OF BURNER DESIGNS, SUITABLE FOR LIGNITE AND WITH KNOWN PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS; AND A CALCULATION PROCEDURE, EMBODIED IN A COMPUTER PROGRAM, WHICH WILL BE SUITABLE FOR THE PREDICTION OF BURNER PERFORMANCE. EXTENSIVE INFORMATION WILL ALSO BE PROVIDED ON MEASUREMENTS AND MODEL-ASSUMPTIONS FOR TWO-PHASE FLOWS AND WILL BE USEFUL, AS WILL THE COMPUTER PROGRAM, FOR OTHER FORMS OF SOLID-FUEL COMBUSTION INCLUDING PULVERISED COAL AND OIL SPRAYS.
