Objective
THE DEVELOPED EROSION-CORROSION MODEL FOR SULPHIDIZING/OXIDIZING ENVIRONMENTS IN ADVANCED COAL CONVERSION SYSTEMS SHOULD ALLOW PRODUCTION OF QUANTITATIVE DATA CONCERNING IN-PLANT MATERIAL DEGRADATION AND LIFE CYCLE PREDICTION FOR A SERIES OF CANDIDATE MATERIALS TO BE USED IN THE COMPONENTS AT RISK IN THE INVESTIGATED CONVERSION SYSTEMS.
The overall aim of the research programme was to develop predictive erosion/corrosion models for material degradation in coal conversion systems. To achieve this goal the interaction between erosion and corrosion in coal conversion system environments has been examined in order to determine the mechanism by which material degradation proceeds. It was then possible to develop and verify predictive erosion/corrosion models and validate the models against laboratory and in service data.
The important parameters have been identified for 3 energy conversion systems where erosion/corrosion phenomena are of some importance, namely in fluidized bed coal combustion, in coal gasifiers and in gas turbines for combined cycle systems.
STUDIES OF EROSION/CORROSION WITHIN GAS TURBINES HAVE SHOWN THAT THE FORMATION OF THIN, ADHERENT SCALES, WITH LOW SCALING RATES, ARE BENEFICIAL UNDER HIGH TEMPERATURE EROSION CONDITIONS. HIGH CHROMIUM OR ALUMINIUM CONTAINING MATERIALS THAT FORM CHROMIA OR ALUMINIA SCALES MEET THIS REQUIREMENT. THIS PROGRAMME WILL INVESTIGATE THE EROSION/CORROSION BEHAVIOUR OF ADVANCED NICKEL, COBALT AND IRON BASED ALLOYS/COATINGS WHICH FORM STABLE SCALES AND THEREFORE OFFER THE POTENTIAL FOR GOOD EROSION/CORROSION RESISTANCE.
