Objective
THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT IS TO COLLECT KINETIC DATA FOR A FEASIBILITY STUDY ON A MICROBIAL DESULPHURIZATION PROCESS FOR HIGH SULPHUR COALS AND COAL FINES.
Microbial coal desulphurization has been tested on a pilot scale (50 cubic metres). The installation was built at the premises of ENICHEM, Porto Torres, Italy. Pulp densities of up to 40% weight per volume do not interfere with the first order kinetics. Residence time for 90% pyrite removal is around 5 days. The economics are marginal due to the high energy costs.
IN THE MICROBIAL DESULPHURIZATION PROCESS BACTERIA WHICH CAN OXIDIZE THE MAIN INORGANIC SULPHUR COMPOUND IN COAL, PYRITE, ARE USED. THE COAL MUST BE GROUND TO MAKE THE PYRIT, ENCLOSED IN THE COAL, ACCESSIBLE TO MICROBIAL ATTACK, AND MIXED WITH WATER AT A LOW PH. THE WATER-SOLUBLE OXIDATION PRODUCTS DISSOLVE IN THE WATER PHASE.
IN EUROPE, HIGH SULPHUR COALS AND COAL FINES ARE PRODUCED IN LARGE QUANTITIES. REMOVING THE SULPHUR BEFORE USE WILL REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION.
A REACTOR DESIGN AND A COMPLETE FLOW SHEET OF THE PROCESS WILL BE PRODUCED. DATA MUST BE AVAILABLE ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MATERIALS THAT CAN BE TREATED AND THE PRODUCTS THAT CAN BE EXPECTED. THE INFLUENCE OF PARAMETERS IN THE PROCESS, SUCH AS TEMPERATURE, PH, IONIC STRENGTH, PARTIAL OXYGEN PRESSURE, SLURRY DENSITY AND THE PARTICLE SIZE OF THE MATERIALS MUST BE KNOWN. THE COST OF THE PROCESS WILL BE ESTIMATED.
