Objective
THE PROPOSED STUDY CONCERNS A NEW APPROACH TO THE USE OF COAL/WATER MIXTURES.
THE APPLICATIONS OF THE PROCEDURE AND THE CHANGES REQUIRED ON THE PART OF THE POTENTIAL USERS ARE NOT READILY PREDICTABLE AT THIS STAGE.
A PATENT APPLICATION HAS BEEN FILED.
THE INSTALLATION WILL BE MODULAR AND MOUNTED ON A SKID PLATFORM SO THAT IT CAN BE TRANSPORTED TO AN INDUSTRIAL SITE FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES.
CONCENTRATED COAL WATER MIXTURES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED IN RECENT YEARS WITH A VIEW TO OBTAINING PRODUCTS WHICH CAN BE EASILY PUMPED AND TRANSPORTED AND HENCE USED AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR FUEL OIL. THESE MIXTURES HAVE THE MAJOR ADVANTAGE OF BEING SAFE TO TRANSPORT AND STORE. HOWEVER, IT HAS PROVED DIFFICULT TO OBTAIN HIGH COAL CONTENT (>70%) AND TO AVOID HIGH VISCOSITY WITH SUCH MIXTURES. THE SOLUTION, DEVELOPED BY FRAMATOME AND UTC, IS TO PRODUCE A COAL/WATER/AIR MIXTURE IN THE FORM OF A FOAM. THE MAIN ADVANTAGES EXPECTED ARE AS FOLLOWS:
- POSSIBILITY OF ACHIEVING A HIGH COAL CONTENT (70% AND MORE);
- NO NEED FOR SOPHISTICATED PARTICLE SIZE GRADING;
- LOW PRESSURE DROP;
- LOW SENSITIVITY TO TYPE OF COAL USED;
- SELF-ATOMIZATION BY RELEASE AT THE BURNER.
