Objective
THE AIM OF THE PROPOSAL IS THEREFORE TO MAKE AVAILABLE ON A KILOGRAM SCALE A SERIES OF COAL MACERALGROUPS FOR THE RD&D ON COAL CONVERSION PROCESSES. THREE MACERALGROUPS, I.E. VITRINITE, EXINITE (LIPTINITE) AND INERTINITE WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE, ORIGINATING FROM A SUITE OF FIVE WELL SELECTED HARDCOALS. THE SUITE OF COALS IS TO BE SELECTED ON BASIS OF DEGREE OF COALIFICATION AND ON GEOLOGICAL AGE.
BY MEANS OF A THOROUGH PHYSICO-CHEMICAL ANALYSIS SCHEME THE PRODUCTION OF PURE PHASES WILL BE SECURED.
COAL AS A FUEL OR A FEEDSTOCK IS A RATHER TRICKY MATERIAL. COAL RESOURCES HAVE BEEN FORMED IN VARIOUS GEOLOGICAL PERIODS UNDER ALMOST UNIQUE CONDITIONS. IN ADDITION COAL IS A HETEROGENEOUS MATERIAL. ITS BEHAVIOUR CANNOT BE EXPLAINED SUFFICIENTLY BY ITS ELEMENTAL ANALYSIS.
THE BEHAVIOUR OF A HETEROGENEOUS MATERIAL MAY BE DESCRIBED BY MEANS OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF ITS CONSTITUENTS AND ADDITIONAL MIXING RULES. COAL CONSISTS OF INORGANIC AND ORGANIC COMPONENTS. THE LATTER MAY BE SUBDIVIDED IN THREE MACERALGROUPS. NOWADAYS A MACERALGROUP ANALYSIS IS QUITE COMMON. BUT, PROPERTIES OF THE MACERALGROUPS ARE HARDLY KNOWN AND MIXING RULES HAVE NOT YET BEEN ESTABLISHED. MAINLY DUE TO THE UNAVAILABILITY OF THESE COAL COMPONENTS.
