Objective
THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROPOSAL IS THE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT USING BIOTECHNOLOGY TO REDUCE THE SULPHUR CONTENT OF COAL.
THIS PROPOSAL IS FOR RESEARCH TO COMPLEMENT AND EXTEND THE USEFUL APPLOCABILITY OF INFORMATION BEING OBTAINED IN THREE ON-GOING PROJECTS IN THE SAME AREA, BEING CONDUCTED JOINTLY AT LABORATORIES IN THE NETHERLANDS, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY AND ITALY. THE WORK AT THE WARREN SPRING LABORATORY HAS BEEN DISCUSSED AND AGREED WITH THE EXISTING CONTRACTORS.
THIS PROJECT PROPOSAL HAS THREE PARTS:
1.- OR BACTERIALLY-ASSISTED HEAP LEACHING PROCESS WILL BE STUDIED, DEVELOPED AND MATHEMATICALLY MODELLED,
2.- OR STRAIN OF THERMOPHILIC BACTERIA DEVELOPED AT WSL WILL BE EVALUATED FOR ITS POTENTIAL IN DESULPHURISING FINE COAL,
3.- OR PROVEN LARGE LAB-SCALE FERMENTER DEVELOPED AT WSL FOR BACTERIAL PROCESSING OF FINE MINERALS IN A CONTINUOUS MODE WILL BE APPLIED TO EVALUATE PERFORMANCE OF ANY THERMOPHILES SHOWING PROMISE IN SMALL SCALE TESTS - WHETHER FROM THE WSL PROGRAMME OR FROM OTHER PARTICIPANTS.
THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM TH WORK WILL FEED INTO THE EXISTING EC PROJECTS BY: A) PROVIDING KINETIC DATA ON THE LEACHING AND REMOVAL OF PYRITIC SULPHUR FROM LUMP COAL; OR
B) ASSESSING THE POTENTIAL OF THIS ROUTE IN COMPARISON WITH FINE-COAL LEACHING
C) DEVELOPING A MATHEMATICAL MODEL TO HELP TO PREDICT THE RATE OF PYRITE LEACHING FROM COAL IN A HEAP OF NOMINATED DESIGN; OR D) PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON ORGANISMS AND REACTIONS IN EXISTING HEAPS OF COAL; OR E) PROVIDE DATA AND INFORMATION ON THE FORMATION OF PRECIPITATED IRON, PARTICULARLY BASIC IRON SULPHATE (JAROSITE) DURING COAL LEACHING; OR F) PROVIDE DATA ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SULPHUR REMOVAL BY THE WSL STRAIN OF THERMOPHILIC BACTERIA (SULFOLOBUS ACIDOCALDARIUS - BIRCH COPPICE ) TO COMPARE WITH THOSE BEING USED BY EXISTING CONTRACTORS; OR
G) PROVIDE INTERMEDIATE SCALE-UP DATA FOR THERMOPHILES OPERATING AT 70 CELSIUS DEGREES IN A CONTINUOUS 10 - 15 LITRE FERMENTER.
