Objective
TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ON A EUROPEAN SCALE ON THE INFLUENCE OF THE MANTLE ON HEAT FLOW AND ON THE CONCENTRATION OF NON-CONDENSIBLE GASES IN VARIOUS GEOTHERMAL RESERVOIRS.
RARE GASES MAY PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT GEOTHERMAL AREAS THAT IS AVAILABLE BY NO OTHER MEANS. THIS CONTRACT WILL CENTRE ON THE FOLLOWING METHODS, TO BE APPLIED IN SW ENGLAND, MASSIF CENTRALE AND GEOTHERMAL AREAS IN ITALY :
- TO DISTINGUISH THE SOURCE OF HEAT AT ANY PARTICULAR SITE AND DEMONSTRATE WHETHER IT IS GENERATED LARGELY BY CRUSTAL RADIOACTIVITY OR WHETHER IT CONTAINS A SIGNIFICANT ADVECTIVE COMPONENT FROM THE MANTLE;
- TO ACT AS CHEMICALLY INERT BUT VERY SENSITIVE TRACERS CHARACTERISING WATERS FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF A GEOTHERMAL RESERVOIR AND TO MONITOR RESERVOIR CIRCULATION DURING PRODUCTION;
- TO PROVIDE A TECHNIQUE FOR ASSESSING AND MONITORING THE GROWTH OF HDR RESERVOIRS DURING ARTIFICIAL STIMULATION AND PRODUCTION;
- TO IDENTIFY SITES OF POTENTIAL GEOTHERMAL INTEREST EVEN WHEN THERE IS NO OTHER HIGH TEMPERATURE SURFACE MANIFESTATION.
ADVANCEMENT:
3HE/4HE RATIOS (R) HAVE BEEN MEASURED IN THE MASSIF CENTRAL, IN LARDARELLO, S.E.ENGLAND THE RHINE VALLEY AND IN NORTH SEA GAS FIELDS. THE R VALUES VARY CONSIDERABLY. WHEREAS MANTLE HE HAS A R VALUE OF ABOUT 10 TO THE POWER OF MINUS 5 AND CRUSTAL HE A VALUE OF 10 TO THE POWER OF MINUS 8, VALUES FOUND IN EUROPE VARY CONSIDERABLY. A DIRECT CORRELATION WITH THE HEAT FLUX HAS NOT BEEN ESTABLISHED. IT IS WORTH NOTING THAT IT IS NOW CLEAR THAT THE MEASUREMENT OF A REGIONALLY SIGNIFICANT CONDUCTIVE HEAT FLUX IN THE CONTINENTAL CRUST IS MUCH MORE DIFFICULT THAN PREVIOUSLY SUPPOSED. THIS IS BECAUSE OF THE CONVECTION OF HEAT BY THE MOVEMENT OF GROUNDWATER DEEP IN THE CRUST. WATER FLOWS WITH CHARACTERISTIC VALUES OF A FEW TENS OF CENTIMETRES PER YEAR CAN DOMINATE THE TEMPERATURE FIELD IN THE UPPER CRUST. THE VALUES FOR R/ VARY BETWEEN 0.01 IN DORSET AND 3.5 IN THE OBERPFALZ IN GERMANY. THE FOLLOWING TALBE SHOWS SOME TYPICAL DATA FOR HERRENALB 0.04 94
