Objetivo
IF RESULTS ARE POSITIVE, A DEMONSTRATION GLASSHOUSE HORTICULTURE PROJECT WILL BE PUT IN HAND, THE FIRST GEOTHERMAL HEAT PROJECT IN THE NETHERLANDS.
The first geothermal exploratory operation in the Netherlands has been carried out. The test well has demonstrated that geological inventory studies should be used with great care in estimating geothermal reserves. Before the well was started, 4 potential geothermal reservoirs were identified. Only 1 of these reservoirs (Breda formation) actually turned out to be suitable. The most promising reservoir in the long term, the Berg Sand, could not be identified as such on the basis of the geological data available.
In The Netherlands, research on the possibilities for exploitation of geothermal energy was started about 10 years ago. The first exploratory geothermal well, however, was completed in 1987. The well was drilled by TNO-Institute of Applied Geoscience within the framework of the National Research programme on Geothermal Energy and Energy Storage in Aquifers (NOAA) on behalf of the Management Office for Energy Research. The research was funded in part by the Directorate General for Research and development (DG XII) of the Commission of the European Communities.
Previous inventory studies carried out between 1979 and 1984 gave a global picture of possible locations for geothermal exploitation. The primary aim of the geothermal exploration well was to aquire reliable geological data and reservoir characteristics for the entire profile of the hole. The geological monitoring programme together with core analysis studies provided accurate lithostratigraphical descriptions and lithological descriptions of teh various reservoir formations relevant to geothermal energy.
Geochemical information on the chloride content of the formation water at various depths was obtained by testing the pore water in sediment samples. During the testing of the well water samples were collected for complete analysis.
The geothermal reserves of 2 potential reservoirs are estimated from the results of the test well.

THE MAXIMUM DEPTH OF THE BOREHOLE WILL BE 1550 M. THE INTENTION IS TO USE THE DATA OBTAINED IN A DEMONSTRATION PROJECT.
