Objective
IN CONCLUSION AND EXTENSION OF RESEARCH WORK STARTED IN THE PRECEDING PROGRAMME THE MAIN AIM OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO DEVELOP AN IMPROVED TECHNIQUE TO PRODUCE IN A SINGLE STEP CERMET-TYPE INTEGRATED ELECTRODE-DIAPHRAGM UNITS FOR ALKALINE WATER ELECTROLYSIS, THUS DECREASING PRODUCTION COSTS IN VIEW OF LARGE SCALE APPLICATIONS.
Initially, the desirable selectivity of catalysts for coal and heavy oil conversion is defined. The desired selectivity is then related to individual reaction steps in the polystep reaction mechanism and respective catalyst specific activities. Cobalt molybdenum sulphide, nickel molybdenum sulphide and nickel tungsten sulphide on alumina and iron catalysts are compared for hydrosulphurisation (HDS), hydrodeoxygenation (HDO), hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) and aromatic ring hydrogenation.
The influence of hydrogen partial pressure is shown to affect individual HDO reaction steps differently. The reaction mechanisms thus change with changing hydrogen partial pressure. The HDO reaction network is evaluated in detail for benzofuran and dibenzofuran and a very high structure sensitivity is observed. The work is regarded as a basis for the development of selective catalysts for coal and heavy oil hydrogenation.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF A TECHNIQUE TO PRODUCE NI- NET SUPPORTED CERMET DIAPHRAGMS (NICKEL REINFORCED MIXTURES OF CATIO3 AND BATIO3) FOR USE IN ALKALINE WATER ELECTROLYSIS WAS SUCCESSFULLY ACHIEVED IN PREVIOUS CONTRACTS. AS THE EVALUATED PRODUCTION COSTS WERE RELATIVELY HIGH THIS PROJECT AIMED AT EXTENDING AND IMPROVING THIS TECHNIQUE SO THAT PRODUCTION IN ONE SINGLE SINTERING STEP WAS POSSIBLE. IN THIS CONCEPT ELECTRODE-DIAPHRAGM UNITS ARE PRODUCED SIMULTANEOUSLY WHERE POROUS ELECTRODES ARE ALREADY FIXED ONTO THE CERMET DIAPHRAGM SURFACE DURING THE SINTERING PROCESS AND THE ELECTRODES MAY CONTAIN CATALYTICALLY ACTIVE ELEMENTS TO INCREASE ELECTRODE EFFICIENCY.
