Objective
DEVELOPMENT OF A NOVEL TWO STAGE COAL LIQUEFACTION PROCESS. THE FIRST (PRETREATMENT) STAGE WILL CONSIST OF A CHEMICAL DEPOLYMERISATION OF THE MORE REACTIVE COMPONENTS OF COAL UNDER MILD CONDITIONS, WHICH THEN WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A CATALYTIC HYDROLIQUEFACTION STAGE.
The possibility of using coal depolymerisation as a beneficial pretreatment in coal liquefaction was tested using a Spanish lignite from Utrillas which was successively depolymerised and hydrogenated under mild conditions. Using depolymerisation conditions previously described in the literature and mild hydrogenation conditions, the results showed that depolymerisation improved the extraction yield of the global process when matched with suitable hydrogenation conditions. Extract yields in the 60-70% range were reached for the most active depolymerisation reactions when coupled to hydrogenation in cyclohexane 2% with tetralin. This showed an important increase when compared both with the depolymerisation only and hydrogenation only procedures.
This work is being extended to less expensive depolymerisations and more classical hydrogenations, using zinc chloride toluene depolymerisation and tubing bomb, 400 C, molybdenum sulphide catalysed, dry hydrogenation.
THE FIRST STAGE OF THE PROPOSED PROCESS REQUIRES VERY MILD CONDITIONS TO CATALYTICALLY DEPOLYMERIZE THE REACTIVE COAL COMPONENTS: ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE, 110-120 CELSIUS DEGREES, ACID CATALYST: ZNCL2 (COAL-CATALYST RATIO 1:1 OR 1:2), SOLVENT: TOLUENE (COAL-SOLVENT RATIO 1:10).
THE PARTLY DEPOLYMERIZED COAL RESIDUE IS HIGHLY REACTIVE, SO THAT THE SECOND STAGE, CATALYTIC HYDROLIQUEFACTION, WILL REQUIRE MIDLER REACTION CONDITIONS THAN A CLASSICAL TWO STAGE LIQUEFACTION PROCESS: 400 CELSIUS DEGREES OR LESS, PRESSURES 150 BAR TO 300 BAR, FE OR MO CATALYSTS IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS, RECYCLED ASPHALTENES IMPREGNATED WITH CATALYST FROM THIS SECOND STAGE.
