CATALYSIS OF HYDROLIQUEFACTION OF COAL MACERALS. COMPARISON WITH RAW COALS.

Objective

COMPARISON BETWEEN THE COMPOSITIONS OF THE LIQUID PHASES PRODUCED BY HYDROLIQUEFACTION (HL) OF MACERALS, SYNTHETIC COAL (MIXTURE OF MACERALS) AND RAW COAL IS ONE OF THE MAIN AIMS OF THE PROJECT.
Catalytic hydroliquefactions (HL) of 2 coals, Freyming-France and Point of Ayr England, and their macerals were studied in a microautoclave in the presence of a hydrogen donor solvent (tetralin). The 2 raw coals showed the same total conversion and similar percentage weight of oil, asphaltene and preasphaltene fractions. Investigating the contribution of each maceral to the global coal liquid, no synergetic effect was found (using HL and the present type of liquid phase analysis) for a synthetic coal. Raw coals, vitrite and exinite had the same total conversion while the fusite was significantly lower. A detailed identification of some individual compounds or of a series of homologous compounds was made for oil fractions. 25% of these fractions could be investigated by gas chromatography (GC-MS) or 5% to 10% weight of the initial coal. Concentrations of a large number of compounds were determined and compared from one maceral to another and general tendencies could be deduced.
MACERALS REPRESENT THE MAIN ORGANIC PHASES OF RAW COAL. COAL MACERAL CONCENTRATES ARE PREPARED BY THE NEW TECHNIQUE WHICH COMBINES THE DIRECT LITHOTYPES TAKING OF COAL MINE BLOCKS WITH DENSITY GRADIENT CENTRIFUGATION.

REACTIVITY OF THESE MACERALS WILL BE STUDIED AND THEIR CATALYTIC HL TESTED IN A MICRO-REACTOR DEVICE.

TWO PARENT COALS PRESENTING DIFFERENT MACERALS RATIOS AND/OR C TO 0 RATIOS WILL BE CONSIDERED TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF THESE PARAMETERS ON THE RESULTING LIQUID COMPOSITION AFTER HL OF MACERALS. THE FIRST PARENT COAL IS COMING FROM "FREYMING" (FRANCE). IT IS HIGHLY VOLATILE BITUMINOUS COAL. THE SECOND PARENT COAL WILL BE FURNISHED BY DR. KANDIYOTI AND CORRESPONDS TO THE COAL TESTED IN HIS PROJECT. THIS COAL WILL BE A POINT OF AYR ONE.

TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE LOW AVAILABLE QUANTITY OF MACERALS, A MICRO-AUTOCLAVE (BURTON-CORBLIN) WILL BE USED.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS REACTOR ARE:

*INTERNAL VOLUME: 50 CM3

*TEMPERATURE MAXIMUM: 450 CELSIUS DEGREES (720K)

*INTERNAL CONTINUOUS STIRRING

*PRESSURE MAXIMUM: 20 MPA.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
