Objective
THE EUROPEAN WIND TURBINE DATA BASE EUROWIN NOW CONTAINS TECHNICAL INFORMATION FOR ABOUT 600 DIFFERENT TURBINE TYPES AND NEARLY 1700 OPERATING TURBINES. FOR EASY COMPARISON OF DIFFERENTLY SIZED WIND TURBINES, SPECIFIC FIGURES SUCH AS ENERGY OUTPUT PER ROTOR SWEPT AREA OR GENERATION COSTS OF WIND ENERGY ARE BEING USED FOR INDIVIDUAL MACHINES AS WELL AS FOR TURBINE CLASSES. THE ANNUAL SPECIFIC ENERGY YIELD INCREASES WITH INCREASED WIND TURBINE SIZE AT LEAST UP TO THE 20 METERS OF DIAMETER. WHEN USING A GOOD MACHINE, WHICH IS SITED OPTIMALLY, THE SPECIFIC ENERGY OUTPUT CAN BE MORE THAN 900 KWH/M2 A. THE SAME SPECIFIC ENERGY OUTPUT FIGURE HAS BEEN PLOTTED FOR DIFFERENT ROTOR-DIAMETER CLASSES IN FIG.2. EACH BAR REPRESENTS THE AVERAGE OF THE SPECIFIC ENERGY OUTPUT OF ALL MACHINES IN THE SAME DIAMETER CLASS FOR THE YEARS 1986 AND 1987. IT CAN BE SEEN THAT FOR 1986 THERE IS A VERY GOOD CONFORMITY BETWEEN MEASUREMENT AND CALCULATION (AVERAGE 92.7%), HOWEVER IN 1987 THE REAL ENERGY PRODUCTION ONLY REACHED 66.9% OF THE PREDICTED VALUES. ON THE BASIS OF AN ANNUITY METHOD THE GENERATION COSTS WERE CALCULATED UNDER ASUMPTION OF 5% CHARGE RATE, 15 YEARS LIFE TIME, 2% FOR ANNUAL O+M-COSTS AND 40% FOR ADDITIONAL INVESTMENT COST FOR NEARLY 650 INDIVIDUAL MACHINES. IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED SITE WIND SPEED WHICH HAD TO BE RECALCULATED FROM THE ESTIMATED ANNUAL ENERGY PRODUCTION AND THE POWER CURVE BY NUMERIC ITERATION. IT CAN BE SEEN THAT A LOT OF MACHINES HAVE GENERATION COST UNDER 0.1 ECU/KWH, BEST OF THEM NEAR 0.05 ECU/KWH.
