WAKE AND CLUSTER EFFECTS OF THE "ZEEBRUGGE WIND FARM"

Objective

MEASUREMENT OF WIND TURBINE WAKES AT THE ZEEBRUGGE WIND FARM.

THE FULL-SCALE MEASURING EQUIPMENT IN THE CLUSTER OF 23 TURBINES AT ZEEBRUGGE IS ABOUT TO COME INTO OPERATION. DATA COLLECTION OF TEN-MINUTES AVERAGE VALUES OF WIND SPEED AND DIRECTION AT ONE PROVISIONAL MAST, AS WELL AS THE RECORDING OF THE TURBINES' POWER OUTPUT, STARTED RECENTLY.
THE INSTRUMENTATION FOR THE DATA ACQUISITION AT TWO METEOROLOGICAL TOWERS INSTALLED BY THE RUCA, AS WELL AS THE DATA PROCESSING SOFTWARE FOR AVERAGING OVER A 30-SECOND PERIOD AND OBTAINING TURBULENCE INTENSITIES IS NEAR COMPLETION. UPTO NOW ONLY A RESTRICTED SET OF PRELIMINARY NON-WAKE AND WAKE DATA IS AVAILABLE.
FROM A QUICK LOOK AT THE LIMITED DATA SET COLLECTED UPTO NOW, ONE CAN DRAW SOME PRELIMINARY CONCLUSIONS :
- CONSIDERABLE TERRAIN AND OBSTACLE EFFECTS ARE OBSERVED;
- POWER DEFICIT VARIES DRAMATICALLY WITH AMBIENT WIND SPEED AND DIRECTION;
- HARDWARE AND DATA PROCESSING SOFTWARE FOR OBTAINING 30 AVERAGES AND TURBULENCE INTENSITIES HAVE TO BE PUT IN OPERATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE;
- SIMULTANEOUS RECORDING AT TWO TOWERS AND THREE LEVELS WILL GIVE MORE USEFUL DATA;
- A MORE DETAILED AND SOPHISTICATED ANALYSIS IS RECOMMENDED;
- FOR A PRECISE VERIFICATION OF THE NUMERICAL MODEL, A LONGER PERIOD OF MEASUREMENTS (1 YEAR) IS NECESSARY.
