EFFECT OF TURBULENCE ON THE DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF WIND TURBINE.

Objetivo

TURBULENCE EFFECTS ARE VERY IMPORTANT FOR DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF WIND TURBINE STRUCTURE, FOR MATERIALS FATIGUE AND FOR ROTOR POWER EFFICIENCY; SO IT IS OF FIRST NECESSITY TO MAKE ACCOUNT OF TURBULENCE IN WIND TURBINE CALCULATION MODEL. FOR THAT, WIND TURBINE DESIGNERS NEED A RELIABLE MODEL VALIDATED BY IN SITU EXPERIMENT.
IT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY TO CARRY OUT SUCH MODEL.
The gust model which has been developed will be able to furnish, with the associated software, a complete description of gust parameters. For 1-point statistics, the findings of Bergstrom (1987) have been exploited in order to give joint probabilistic distributions of amplitude and duration. These findings have been confirmed by experimental validation and extended to the case of lateral fluctuations. For spatial statistics, a method of simulation has given the joint distributions of gust parameters, namely maximum amplitude of the gust over the rotor disc, gust duration and characteristic dimension, both for the longitudinal and the lateral components. The results have been validated by in situ measurements.

The experimental device built could be used in the future for other experiments, for instance, for a better knowledge of the spatial structure of gusts or for rotating sampling.
THE ELABORATION OF A GUST MODEL FOR THE NEEDS OF WIND TURBINE DESIGNERS HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT, FOLLOWING FOUR STEPS :

1/ BOTH FOR LONGITUDINAL AND LATERAL COMPONENT OF THE WIND, THREE CHARACTERISTIC PARAMETERS OF GUSTS HAVE BEEN SELECTED :

- A, AMPLITUDE OF THE GUST AT THE DISC PLACE SWEPT BY THE BLADES, WHERE THE AMPLITUDE IS MAXIMUM;
- T, DURATION OF THE GUST;
- L, CHARACTERISTIC DIMENSION OF THE GUST IN A VERTICAL PLANE.

2/ AN ANALYTICAL EXPRESSION FOR INSTANTANEOUS WINDSPEED, IN FUNCTION OF THESE PARAMETERS HAS BEEN PROPOSED.

3/ EQUATIONS OF THE MODEL HAVE BEEN SET UP : THE STATISTICS DISTRIBUTIONS OF PARAMETERS A, T, L, ARE SETTLED FOR EACH DIRECTION OF WINDSPEED AND EACH MEAN WINDSPEED. THE WHOLE STATISTICS ARE THEN CALCULATED BY INTEGRATION FOR ALL SITUATIONS, CONSIDERING DIRECTION FREQUENCIES AND WIND SPEED DISTRIBUTION IN EACH SECTOR FOR THE SITE.

FOR A GIVEN ROUGHNESS AND MEAN WINDSPEED, THE RESULTS ARE OBTAINED FROM :
- STANDARD DEVIATION O OF WIND COMPONENT;
- MEAN DURATION OF GUSTS T, CALCULATED FROM SPECTRAL DENSITY BY RICE'S THEORY;
- JOINT PROBABILITY DENSITIES F(,), F(L,), F(,L) WHERE =A/O AND =T/T

JOINT PROBABILITY DENSITIES OF DURATION AND AMPLITUDE AT A FIXED POINT (NOTED AO) ARE ESTIMATED FROM THE MEASUREMENTS OF BERGSTROEM. THEN, TO DETERMINE THE CONDITIONAL DISTRIBUTION OF MAXIMUM AMPLITUDE ON A VERTICAL DISC, GIVEN T, WINDFIELD ON THIS DISC IS SIMULATED, FROM THE ONE-POINT DISTRIBUTION AND THE SPATIAL CORRELATIONS, GIVEN BY THE ROOT-COHERENCE FUNCTION. A SIMILAR METHOD CAN ALSO GIVE THE JOINT DISTRIBUTIONS F(L,) AND F(
,L).

4/ THIS MODEL WILL BE VALIDATED IN 1989 BY AN IN-SITU EXPERIMENT IN A FLAT WINDY UNOBSTRUCTED TERRAIN. A SOFTWARE WILL ALLOW AN EASY USE OF THE MODEL.
