WIND FARMS IN COMPLEX TERRAIN.

Objectif

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP ENGINEERING METHODS TO OPTIMIZE THE LAY-OUT OF A WIND TURBINE CLUSTER WHICH IS LOCATED IN TOPOGRAPHICAL COMPLEX TERRAIN, WITHIN AN EXISTING LOCAL POWER GRID.

COMPUTER CODES FOR THE PREDICTION OF THE POWER OUTPUT FROM WIND FARMS IN FLAT TERRAIN ALREADY EXIST, E.G. THE SEMI-EMPIRICAL MILLY - AND FARMS - CODES DEVELOPED AT MT-TNO AND A SIMILAR CODE DEVELOPED AT THE UNIVERSIDAD POLITECNICA DE MADRID (UPM).
APPLICATION OF SUCH COMPUTER CODES WILL ALSO BE OF IMPORTANCE TO THE DESIGN OF WIND FARMS IN COMPLEX TERRAIN, BUT IS RESTRICTED DUE TO THE CONSTANT WIND FLOW FIELD INPUT. THE TOPOGRAPHY OF THE TERRAIN HOWEVER INFLUENCES THE LOCAL WIND FLOW. FOR THAT REASON THE MENTIONED COMPUTER CODES WILL BE MODIFIED. VALIDATION DATA ARE AVAILABLE FROM A WIND FARM AT GERONA (SPAIN).
ANOTHER SPECIFIC PROBLEM AT REMOTE LOCATIONS IS THE EXTENT OF THE POWER NETWORK. IN MOST CASES THE LOCAL GRID WILL BE WEAK. THE CONSEQUENCE, IS THAT THE POWER GRID WILL BE SENSITIVE TO POWER FLUCTUATIONS. THEREFORE, THE EXTENT OF THE LOCAL POWER GRID WILL GENERALLY LIMIT THE INTEGRATION OF (FLUCTUATING) WIND POWER. THE MAXIMUM POWER WILL ALSO BE DEPENDENT OF THE SITING OF THE INDIVIDUAL WIND TURBINES RELATIVE TO THE EXISTING TRANSFORMER STATIONS.
IN ORDER TO CALCULATE THESE EFFECTS, A CALCULATION METHOD WILL BE GENERATED.
IN THE FINAL PART OF THE PROJECT BOTH METHODS WILL BE DESCRIBED AS AN ENGINEERING "TOOL" FOR THE DESIGN OF FUTURE WIND FARMS IN REMOTE LOCATIONS.
