Theoretical and experimental study for the development of efficient and economic stirling regenerators (REGENERATE)

Objectif

Objectives and problems to be solved:
- develop new and improved regenerators for Stirling systems (engines and cryogenerators), characterised by high thermal performances, low flow pressure drops, reduced dead volume and low thermal heat conduction losses;
- determine parameter sets for the regenerator geometry layout, which yield optimal performance for diverse Stirling systems applications;
-investigate theoretically the fluid flow of the working gas through the regenerator structures, the dependent heat transfer and pressure drop, in support of the experimental regenerator development program;
- develop rational technologies for the industrial manufacture of these regenerators, resulting in performant components, which may be realised at affordable cost;
- equip existing Stirling systems with the new regenerators, operate these systems and measure the performances to assess the regenerator efficiencies. Description of the work:- CFD-analysis of the gas flow through the regenerator structures, with determination of the heat transfer and pressure drop taking place;
- determine regenerator structures which are particularly suited for the operation with the selected experimental Stirling systems;
- assess additional regenerator losses which are not taken into account in the CFD-analysis (e.g. regenerator grid imperfections, in- and outflow and wall effects);
- manufacture metallic fabrics having geometries (filament shapes and dimensions, packing densities) which are specifically adapted for their use in Stirling regenerators;
- manufacture complete regenerators of the dimensions required, by improving the technologies involved to approach industrial production standards;
- prepare 3 types of existing Stirling systems (designed for different applications) and
a) operate them with existing (state of the art) regenerators;
b) adapt the systems to the new regenerator requirements;
c) equip them with adequate measuring instruments;
d) run performance tests with the new regenerators;
e) exploit the results obtained for determining the regenerator performances obtained- analyse in detail the experimental and theoretical results of the study and determine for all investigated applications optimum regenerator configurations, from the performance and economic point of view.
Expected results and Exploitation Plans :
- CFD-analysis models for determining performance of new Stirling regenerators;
- metallic fabrics suited for their use in Stirling regenerators, with the corresponding manufacturing technologies;
- complete Stirling regenerators with optimised geometries, for their use in the selected Stirling test systems;
- test runs of the 3 Stirling systems, equipped with the new regenerators, with detailed performance assessment and comparison with the state of the art solutions.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
