Objective
The BIOFEAT project will develop, design, build and test a biodiesel fuel processor for a vehicle auxiliary power unit (APU) utilising a PEMFC or SOFC. An APU enables electrical power, which is used for control, lights, air conditioning etc., to be generated independently from the traction power train. Analyses of the motor industry requirements show an expanding market for APUs. The use of biodiesel as a fuel for traction is being encouraged in the EC as it is renewable, potentially offering greater efficiency and lower emissions. The use of biodiesel for the APU is logistically desirable. Novel processing techniques will be evaluated for the primary process step for the conversion of biodiesel to a hydrogen rich gas. A gas clean-up stage will be developed for PEMFC use. The final deliverable will be a modular 10kWe fuel processor and design, supported by a design tool.
