Deliverables

To calculate the lifetime of a battery it is necessary to know the operating conditions in detail. Based on an existing concept for a system simulation software for autonomous power supply systems Fraunhofer ISE extended the programme in a way that different system designs can be handled with the programme instead of only very few pre-defined system designs. It is now possible to simulate AC or DC coupled batteries and it is possible to simulate various batteries in a system. The outcome of the programme are time series of battery current and temperature over a period of 20 years taking into account the meteorological conditions and the system design including energy management systems and battery charging conditions. The operation condition will change according to the system design and operating strategies. Therefore the impact of any change in the system design or the operation strategy can be quantified in terms of battery lifetime. A direct link between the system simulation software and the battery simulation model will be established.
A literature date base with more than 1000 entries has been made within the project. It is still under discussion if the different partners want to contribute to the date base in the future. All partners will get a copy for their own use if they are going to buy a licence of the commercial literature data base programme used. It was agreed among the partners that the data base should be offered to the public through selling licences. The customers must buy a licence of the commercial literature data base programme and must pay for the data set. The distribution of the licences fees among the partners will be made according to the number of inputs to the data base and to the efforts necessary to sell the data bases including customer service.
A detailed overview on existing accelerated ageing tests has been prepared. It includes tests based on standards; test procedures which were developed in various European projects and procedures used by battery manufacturers and research institutes. This overview will be published in an International Journal and will be available for everybody on this way.
The analysis of batteries from different autonomous power supply systems in the field and the collection of data on operating conditions enhance the knowledge of the partners on ageing effects and operating conditions. Besides this it is planned to unify the methodology for the physico-chemical analysis of batteries. Today this is different among different laboratories and therefore it is difficult to compare the results. No direct commercial exploitation is possible.
For performing electrochemical impedance spectroscopy on lead acid batteries a special hardware has been developed. The hardware allows performing measurements in the range between some kHz and few mHz. The device is automatically driven by a software and allows measurement in serveral cell or battery modules in parallel.
