Application of liquid biofuels in new heating technologies for domestic appliances based on cool flame vaporization and porous medium combustion (BIOFLAM)

Objetivo

Objectives and Problems to be solved:
The major objectives of the project are:
- To realize a boiler able to burn not only fuel oil based on mineral oil but also vegetable oils, recycled cooking oils and mixtures (5% to 20% per volume in fuel oil) of those. Thus CO2 emissions will be reduced by the partial use of renewable fuels (vegetable and recycled cooking oils). The BIOFLAM boiler will include neutralization of sulphuric acid and water condensation improving the overall efficiency by approx. 10% and thus reducing CO2 emissions.
- To reduce NOx emissions by a factor of 2 in comparison to conventional oil boilers.
- To reduce the overall CO2 emission of liquid fuel fired boilers by 20% through improved efficiency and high power modulation 1:10.
- To introduce the innovative boiler technology at a competitive price of 2500 EUR.
Description of work:
In order to achieve the project objectives, the work is organized in 9 work packages (WP).
In WP1 the bio fuels and blends of those with conventional fuels are going to be produced and characterised. Standards like the ones proposed by CEN/TC 19/WG 25 are going to be considered when defining the different bio fuel qualities.
WP2 deals with the development of a vaporizer able to operate with all possible bio fuel blends and producing a gaseous fuel/air mixture. The vaporizer is based on the innovative principle of partial oxidation through cool flames.
In WP3 the burner is developed, which can operate with the hot premixed vaporizer products and shows a stable operation for a high power dynamic range. The burner is based on the innovative principle of stabilized combustion in porous media.
In WP4 the high temperature ceramic components for the burner are developed. The components have to show an extremely high thermal shock resistance and innovative technologies like nano-powders are going to be utilised in the ceramics production. The burner and boiler electronics, sensors and controls are worked out in WP5 utilising advanced methods like the flame signature, in order to control and optimise the fuel/air mixture at varying bio fuels qualities. All components are integrated and combined with the condensing heat exchanger in the boiler construction in WP6. Corrosion resistance with ceramic coatings has to be taken into account, and a development feedback to the previous work packages according to the first test results is expected. As soon as the boiler development is finished, the demonstration part is going to be prepared starting with long term laboratory tests within WP7. The fabrication of about 21 boilers have to be performed prior the installation and monitoring in test households within WP8.
WP9 deals with the coordination of all activities.
Expected Results and Exploitation Plans:
The major result is the BIOFLAM condensing boiler itself able to operate with bio fuels as well as with blends with conventional heating fuels and the integration with other renewable sources (solar). The system will show improved efficiency of 20%, low emission and will cost 2500 EUR. The long-term operation behaviour in laboratory and selected household is a milestone to work the dissemination and exploitation directly by the project partners. The EBA will promote the market introduction.
