Objective
This project will significantly advance 'pig' technology for the inspection of pipelines. Current tools as an instrument platform enables internal inspection at a significantly lower cost than achieve the use of a conventional cleaning pig. A combination of instruments, in conjunction with advanced software analysis will increase the effectiveness of the tool over a wider range of pipeline states. Initial development for offshore oil lines has shown this philosophy to be effective. Successful completion of the project will enable an extension to subsea flow lines, onshore, gas and water lines. Substantial technical development is required to extend use to these market sectors. Research will concentrate on improving the ability to quantify the degree of wax or corrosion build-up, - two primary factors affecting the efficient and safe operation of hydrocarbon lines. The development of new measurement systems will be supported by a substantial laboratory test phase and proved by testing at full scale. The new instrument will address EU priorities relating to the efficient production of energy and protection of the environment through a reduced risk of leaks.
