Ground Penetrating Radar Innovative Research for Highly Reliable Robustness/Accuracy Gas Pipe Detection/Location (Giga)

Objetivo

Objectives and Problems to be solved: Gas energy is highly contributing to a less polluting environment and thus requires the most efficient and safest transport. This requires to use a reliable Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), in term of detection ROBUSTNESS, versus all types of pipes (as plastic) buried in all types of soils (as wet/heterogeneous clay) at deeper ranges. These hardened deep detection specifications are linked to the development of horizontal drilling systems which challenge is to remove digging trenches, hence allowing gas pipe installation with the best protection of the environment. This also induces higher ACCURACY location need. This research study will greatly contribute to solve the problem of more efficient and safer gas transport by providing relevant and quantified end-user detailed GPR specification/evaluation, in addition to innovative GPR research. Description of the work :The GIGA research study involves both end-users (gas, drilling systems,...) and GPR suppliers (combining bottom-up and top-down approaches in GPR innovative research). The first Work package (WP 1) is devoted to need specification by end-users in the gas installation domain, but synergy will be taken into account with other applications such as electricity, water, telecommunications. This specification will address both short term (2004-2005) and medium-long term market products (2005-2010).The WP 2 is devoted to GPR measurement trials on an experimental relevant test area with both an existing GPR (to provide a short term reference) and an experimental flexible one(to provide optimal knowledge of physical phenomena). The WP 3 is devoted to modelling/simulations to closely interact with WP2. The WP 4 is addressing the measurement data analysis and processing to focus the research towards innovative radar signal and data processing specific algorithms. The WP 5 will search for some potential new technical solutions in terms of main radar characteristics (wavelength, bandwidth, power ...) based on innovation research axes such as technology improvement, multiparameter/ multi configuration characteristics to be studied for optimal detection, signal and data processing possibilities to cope with the environment. At last WPs 6,7 and 8 will provide respectively the end-user analysis, the industrial exploitation plans (both short & medium/long terms and both GPR and drilling system) and the result dissemination to all the European gas end-users, according to the TIP version 3.2 process from the Commission. Expected results and Exploitation plans :The main expected results are the End-user specification (short term and medium/long term), the GPR measurement trials, the Data analysis and processing, the GPR environment/physical phenomena (pipes+soils) modelling/simulations, the New GPR technical solutions both bottom up and top down approaches, the End-user evaluation, the Industrial exploitation plans and the European dissemination. This GIGA research study will be followed by a phase 2 combined RTD/demonstration to design, realise and test a new specific GPR prototype.
