Advanced solar facades with integrated collectors-accumulators for domestic hot water and space heating applications (ASFIC)

Objetivo

Objectives and Problems to be solved: The main objective of the project is the development of a new type of solar facade, to be used in conventional urban, singular and refurbished buildings (with conventional or ventilated glazed facades). It will enhance the passive thermal behaviour of the building, increasing its thermal inertia and reducing its U-value, and also will allow the active collection and accumulation of significant quantities of solar thermal energy. The energy collected will be used for the conventional hot water and heating systems of the building. To reduce the cost, collectors and accumulators will be integrated in a single device, that will be prefabricated and then assembled in the facade. The design, that should satisfy technological, esthetical and economic criteria to be successful, will be optimised for three different European climates. To do so, advanced materials such as transparent insulation will be used. Description of the work: A consortium of companies (composed by architecture, engineering and construction companies plus an RTD performer, specialist in solar energy engineering) will be formed. The architectonic, engineering and economic demands needed to satisfy the objectives previously outlined will be analysed. Using the previous experience of the consortium, a set of preliminary designs will be developed. These preliminary designs will be optimised using two methodologies:
· Numerical simulation using:
1. CFD codes for the detailed determination of temperatures and heat flows in different zones of the facades.
2. An architecture code to simulate the behaviour of the buildings with the facades to be developed.
· Experimental work using:
1. The state of the art heat transfer and fluid dynamics experimental techniques (such as particle image velocimetry).%l2. A real size test facade to observe the behaviour of the prototypes built during the project in real outdoor conditions. Experimental data (temperatures, flow rates, heat fluxes, etc) will be recorded and compared with numerical simulations to asses the credibility of the numerical optimisation process. All the experimental facilities needed for the project are available to the RTD performer and already been used successfully for solar energy engineering. At least two prototypes will be constructed and analysed in the test facade during one year. The integration of the facades with conventional HVAC and DHW systems will be studied. The process of construction, installation and control of the prototypes will be used to begin tasks of staff formation. Expected Results and Exploitation Plans: The results of the project will allow the development of facades integrating solar collector-accumulators for domestic hot water and space heating applications. Designs optimised for different European climatic conditions and urban building types will be analysed. Two real-size prototypes and experimental results for one year in outdoor conditions will be obtained. The project foresees a detailed exploitation plan and commercial agreements to ensure the successful business exploitation of the concepts and products developed.
