Objective
Super conducting Magnetic Energy Storages (SMES), made of High transition Temperature Super-Conductors (HTSC), are the solution to achieve future electricity storage common to many applications such as those requiring improvement of power quality, high integration with RES and RUE contexts, long lasting and easy to dispose equipment. A 100 kJ HTSC-SMES technological demonstrator will be designed and constructed by the industrial project partners and tested by two end-users, an industry and a RES laboratory which are also part of the consortium.
The research investigates on this technology potential to enable provision of:
-in the medium-term, 1 kWh class HTSC-SMES for protecting sensitive electric loads from grid malfunctions, such as voltage dips and micro-interruptions.
-in the long-term, much larger HTSC-SMES for use as supporting systems in different contexts of the power generation, including RES.
