Objective
To determine the radiative forcing of anthropogenic aerosols advected over the sub-tropical North Atlantic through the study of the transformation of the aerosol size distribution, chemical composition and hygroscopic
The project is part of the European contribution to the second Aerosol Characterisation Experiment (ACE-2)
of the International Global Atmospheric Chemistry Project (IGAC). ACE-2 and the connection with the other
projects has been discussed at several open planning meetings, and is described in the science and
implementation plan.
The specific tasks are:
1. To investigate the relationship between the cloud droplet size distribution and the chemical composition,
size distribution and hygroscopic properties of the aerosol entering the cloud.
2. To investigate the nucleation scavenging of aerosol as it enters the cloud, as a function of particle size
and chemistry.
3. The effect of aqueous phase cloud chemistry, including the oxidation of S(IV), the production of nitrate
ions, the solution of soluble trace gases on the size distribution, chemical composition and hygroscopic
properties of the aerosol.
4. To investigate possible processes producing new ultra fine particles by gas to particle conversion near
cloud.
5. To investigate the interaction of DMS and its oxidation products with cloud.
6. To study the effects of the entrainment of free tropospheric air through cloud top on each of the above.
Using a ground based system of this kind it will be possible to make detailed continuous measurements of the
atmospheric trace gases entering and leaving the cloud.
Flights will be made using the UK Meteorological Office C-130 aircraft to make profiles of the thermodynamic
and trace gas constituents of the atmosphere over the sea upwind of the island and above the top of the cap
cloud. Process modelling is described which will be essential to the detailed planning of the project and the
interpretation of the data.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
