Exploitable results

Summary: A dataset of surface climate, soil, evaporation, carbon dioxide and methane fluxes for the European Arctic has been created. The dataset covers primarily the late-spring/summer/early-autumn period of the year at 4 field sites in the European Arctic - Ny-Alesund, Svalbard; Zackenberg, NE Greenland; Kevo, N Finland and Kaamanen, N Finland. The data comprises 30 minute averages of climate data, soil physics data, surface energy balance, carbon dioxide and methane fluxes. The flux data was obtained with state-of-the-art eddy correlation instruments including fast response infra-red gas analyzers and tunable diode laser systems. This is a unique dataset that is already providing regional- and continental-scale climate change modelers with precision data for the verification of climate change prediction models. The dataset will also provide the opportunity to comare and contrast circum-polar Arctic regions within Alaska, Canada and northern Russia. The dataset and knowledge gained in its creation provides a linkage to on-going EC projects within the Barents Sea Impacts Study (BASIS) and in the biogenic controls on trace gas fluxes in northern wetlands (CONGAS) programme.
