Mediterranean desertification and land use. Project 2: target areas

Objective

The objective of this Project is to apply and integrate the existing knowledge, obtained in
the different MEDALUS projects in targeted areas along the Northern Mediterranean which are already desertified or threatened by desertification at regional scale.

The work will concentrate on the following aspects:
(a) Identification and mapping of environmentally sensitive areas (ESAs) to
desertification. (b) Definition of ESAs to desertification based on sets of
measured attributes such as climate variability, ecosystems, land use changes,
land abandonment, and landscape characteristics. (c) Investigation of specific
processes involved in land degradation and desertification. (d) Development
and improvement of counter measurements and strategies for sustainable management of land resources and protection against desertification. The project involves the detailed study of the issue of desertification mitigation, policy
making, and regional level interactions in four areas along the northern Mediterranean and
the Atlantic coastline which in particular are located in Alentejo (Portugal),
Guadalentin-Segura basins (Spain), Agri valley (Italy), and Lesvos (Greece). The studied
sites are on a variety of landscapes and lithological units, and under a number of land-uses
representative of the Mediterranean region, such as semi-natural forests and
shrubland, abandoned agricultural land or agricultural land. The important results expected from this project are the following: (a) Presentation and documentation ESAs to desertification in the Mediterranean region. (b) Insights into the actions required to meet specific
problems which, while arising and set in the context of the individual target
areas, have wider regional significance. (d) Development of a methodology for
mapping ESAs which can be applied throughout the Mediterranean region and may
be used as a policy tool by national and transnational agencies to implement
policy strategies, and formulate useful guidelines for future policy strategies for mitigation action against desertification.
The project will offer benefits at Community level such as:
(a) The synthesis of the desertification problems at regional scale in four
selected Target Areas along the Northern Mediterranean region. (b) The proposition of specific actions for mitigation of the desertification problems
in the areas. (c) By using these Target Areas to enable the European Commission and the European Parliament to generate a coherent and unified approach toward the treatment of desertified or desertification-threatened
areas in the light of Annex IV of the Convention on Desertification.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
