Objetivo

To organize a workshop to assess the requirements of the EU Environment and Climate Programme research projects in terms of climate change scenarios, construction methods and observed climatological data, and how far these requirements have been met. To establish a network (ECLAT) that will encompass the component projects of the EU Environment and Climate Programme.


In order to help precipitate discussion within the EU climate change research programme about the needs of the
component projects with regards to climate change scenarios, scientific advice on scenario construction methods
and observed climate data, a 2 - 3 day workshop will be held. This will discuss the needs of the component
projects of the EU Environment and Climate Programme with a view to adopting a standardised entry-level for
climate change scenarios and observed climatological data, and will evaluate methods that have been developed
for climate change scenario construction. The workshop will bring together representatives of the EU
Environment and Climate Programme research projects to discuss the current/proposed methods, data sources
(e.g. both results from recently completed or planned GCM, regional climate change experiments and baseline
climatologies) and use of scenarios.
The primary purpose of the ECLAT Network will be to develop communication between the component projects
of the EU Environment and Climate Programme regarding the specific issues that surround the construction of
climate change scenarios and the observed climate data sets for use in climate change research projects. Such
a network will encourage the development of standard entry level climate change scenarios and will evaluate
the different methods that are used for the construction of more specific and detailed scenarios. An
accompanying role of the ECLAT Network co-ordination node will be to act as a focal point for the relaying
of information about the experiments of the major European climate modelling centres and the wider climate
scenario and data needs of the EU Environment and Climate Programme. The ECLAT community will initially
be defined from the scientists or institutions involved in EU Climate Change Research at the first workshop
outlined above. An 'electronic' newsletter will be used as the communication media of the network which will
help in efficient communication between the ECLAT nodes.
