An integrated methodology for projecting the impact of climate change and human activity on soil erosion and ecosystem degradation in the Mediterranean: A climatological gradient and dynamic systems approach.

Objective

To develop and test an integrated complex systems methodology for projecting the impact of climate change and human activity on soil erosion and ecosystem degradation along climatological transects located on representative geo-ecological zones on limestone and marl areas at sites across the Mediterranean.

Key process of erosion and desertification will be measured and monitored at different scales along climatologically documented transects in Alicante, Crete, Israel. These measurements will be related to grazing, fire, land use and economic activity, as these vary with respect to climate. Attention will be given to establishing how relationships between processes at different hierarchical scales are affected by the above mentioned
stressors. In Israel and Alicante soil erosion will be measured to provide reference information for monitoring and modelling and. In Crete, vegetation responses to stressors will be
documented and modelled. At the Alicante site the data collection and modelling will interface with a socio-economic study at the same location carried out under the ARCHIOMEDES project. The soil and hydrological modelling will be interfaced with the MODMED project modelling.
Response unit methodology, dynamic systems modelling and remote sensing will be applied to scale up process-pattern features and for integrating the effects of climatologically, socioeconomically and biophysically driven processes.
Dynamic models will further be used for scenario analysis to make projections about the future risks resulting from climate change, drought, fire and human activity in Mediterranean limestone and marl areas.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
