Objective
To assess the role of land-use and land preparation practices involved in desertification and soil erosion by wind in a Northern Mediterranean region; to model the dynamics of wind-induced erosion; to predict future developments of desertification linked to land degradation by wind erosion, taking into account scenarios induced by climate change; and to identify simple indicators of potential desertification and soil erosion by wind at a regional scale.
The overall purpose of the project is to provide a predictive understanding of impacts driven by
climate and land-use changes on he degradation of agricultural soils by wind erosion in the
semiarid, dryland cropping areas of Central Aragon (NE Spain) already threatened by
desertification. This can be done by investigating the loss of soil nutrients due to wind erosion.
The project is subdivided into four main scientific tasks, ranging from a microscale evaluation
of environments and factors involved in dust production (characterisation of soil surface
properties affecting wind erosion, parameterisation of total dust flux, measurement of vertical
fluxes of soil particles and nutrients) to the development of a dust emission model allowing us
to test future consequences of climate and land-use changes.
Basic data acquisition will be performed at selected cultivated field site, during the whole dry and
windy summer season for a two-year period. Modelling will be achieved by including surface
parameters proved to be sensitive to climate and land-use changes in an existing wind erosion
model used to inventory alkaline particulate emissions. This will be done by collecting additional
data during two intensive field campaigns and by integrating processes from laboratory studies.
The application at regional scale of the new model will allow a quantitative specialisation of soilnutrients losses in Central Aragon.
The final product will provide a new perspective on the interdependence of the various factors
affecting wind erosion with global change. In addition, the outcome of the project will be useful
for a more effective implementation of sustainable agro-environmental management measures for
soil conservation in Mediterranean countries, particularly in marginal semiarid dryland areas
already bearing a process of land abandonment due to current agricultural policies.
